Any Food Lies?

Okay- a friend and I were talking... he confided in me that he always keeps a few fancy/expensive bottles of wine in his kitchen even though he doesn't drink it. He says he keeps them simply to attract & impress girls!

Another friend has simple (okay- JUVENILE) tastes but she always stocks what she perceives as fancy things in her cupboard hoping guys will spy them there and get a totally different impression of her. Like pesto, tapenade, olives, anchovies, oils-...

That got me to thinking... at one time I remember keeping several varieties of hot sauce on a neat little tray in the fridge to pull out only when I had dates over (don't ask why- but when I date it tends to be w/ those who are hot sauce fiends!) just to make my dates feel more comfy and to give us something in common to bond over! Is that whacko, or what?

Have you ever told any food lies? Or used food to pull the wool over someone's eyes, somehow?

My lies tend to be in the opposite direction mainly with my kids. My youngest daughter says she doesn't like onions. I can hide them quite well in certain dishes.

Like Rick, it is usually bending the truth to get the kids to eat something they don't like.

I remember a tv commercial with someone in a kitchen, throwing flour and such around making it look like they had been cooking all day while the meal was being delivered for the date or get together. Of course it tasted like home made, lol.

My mother used to do this with Jello cheesecake from the box when I was young. She would make it about once a year and for all the fuss she made you would think it took her three days.

mama would beat me w/ IC's oak paddle if she knew this, but I frequently will make pasta and use at least part- if not all jarred spaghetti sauce!

I buy several brands when it's on sale- I like a couple of Paul Newman varities- also some Ragu and Prego.

I tend to like my sauce deep, thick and rich though, so regardless of how I make it- whether it's real or using store-bought quick-aids, I almost always add in a small can of tomato paste- I prefer the rich depth of flavor, and body it always adds.

Then of course I take out the garbage to hide the empty jars before any guests arrive!

SACRELIGIOUS!

I use jarred sauce many times - but it is my jarred sauce that I made. Always a rich, thick sauce.

If I were to buy ONE jar of sauce - my relatives would come out of the grave and get me good!

YOu know I think I'm going to start using jarred tomato sauce more often. In the summer I grow tomatoes and I do make some into sauce for the winter but I could never make enough. I have been reading alot lately about bpa in the cans that are used for canned foods and their link to cancer. Well it just seems like every one I know has at least had precancerous cells if not actual full blown cancer. I really think our artificial environment is making us sick. So jarred tomato sauce may not be as fresh as the one you make yourself but at least nothing nasty is leaching from the jar. I use pommi in the box sometimes too.

I make sauce to freeze and to can throughout the whole year. It's a great time saver and besides, I could never make a small pot of sauce - I don't think I would know how!

Speaking of sauces, no one can compare with the spaghetti sauce especially with cheese and garlic and onion and spices..try it.

I always make my own sauces, not because I'm so into homemade, but to keep the sodium down. If it wasn't for that stinking restriction I would pull a jar of Prego down now and then.

Most of my family thinks I don't eat beef. When in reality I do. I don't particularly enjoy it but I got tired of making two meals at home. My husband is a "meatatarian" and from the time I was like 7 or 8 until I was 21, I never ate red meat. I was pregnant when I started eating ground beef and haven't stopped since then.

I used boxed cake mix (but added some special stuff to it) to make my daughters birthday cake. Everyone thought I made it from scratch and I didn't let them think otherwise.

I think that very few people in the UK make their own sauces. Particularly pasta sauces. In fact, the sauce isle is usually one of the biggest in most supermarkets. And it is no wonder. Because all the famous TV chefs, in the UK. Instead of advocating, making your own, have taken to endorsing commercially made brands. Having their face and name spread all over the jar.
