Birthday Dinner Ideas

My father in law's birthday is on the 13 of May. I want to make him a yummy dinner to take him on his BD. I was thinking..

BBq smoked chicken wings
Buttermilk Biscuits
Coleslaw
Baked beans
Corn on the cob
Lemon cooler cream cake for dessert

I will make tons of it because he loves left overs.
What do you think of my menu? Maybe add some green beans and new taters?

would you be interested in anything like this?

Green Bean Medley

1 Lb green beans
4-5 carrots, sliced
6 potatoes
1 med onion
juice of 1 lemon
olive oil
salt and pepper to taste
fresh parsley

Use fresh veggies. Cut and cover with water. Cook about 15 minutes or until tender but not mushy. Drain and add lemon juice and olive oil. Sprinkle with fresh snipped parsley.

His Dad does like pickles and I have always wanted to try fried pickles. I may just add that to my list. Thanks!

Yeah fried pickles and fried green tomatoes and fried mozarella sticks would be a good fried combo appetizer!

Have you ever fried mozzarella cheese? It is so good and if you prepare them right they work out just fine! You have to coat the cheese sticks in batter then roll in seasoned bread crumbs and freeze. You drop the frozen peices in, and after they are brown yank them out of the oil. They are so delicious!!!! Do not over fry as melted cheese will ooze out:(

I just may do the fried pickles. I cannot get green tomatoes right now. Jon would love some fried mozerella but I will have to make all of the food and take it there. I want to have it for him when he comes back from taking care of the animals at Jon's brothers. He usually gets back around 1pm or so and is starved to death.
Im afraid fried items may not be very good if he is later that usual. That is one reason I went with the bbq smoked chicken. It will be just as good if it sits a little while with a min in the microwave. Fried pickes and fried mozerella wont be good reheated. If I tell him Im making his supper he will say what he always does. Don't go to the trouble. Don't put yourself out.. yada yada lol.

(Gawd- at least you didn't put "beer-battered placenta" on your menu! That last thread is still creepn' me out!)

Amen Brother!!!

I wish that "goatthang" would VANISH! I read his reply to our reply's (at least he has a sence of humor.....but...Hey dude what the he**) I could never have believed that someone would post such pure -T- rubbish here at SpicePlace........as a matter-of-fact I would rather see a spam post than the crap he posted!

Well Im gonna go ahead and do his BD dinner tomorrow even though it is not til Wed.
I figure his other son may want to do something with him Wed so this will free things up. Jon and I will see him on Wed to give him his presents and card of course.
So here is what I decided to make.
Smoked honey bbq chicken wings plus smoked pulled pork.
Coleslaw, baked beans, buttermilk biscuits, roasted garlic baby new potatoes with herbs de provence, corn on the cob & roasted asparagus.
For dessert chocolate custard pie and chocolate dipped strawberries.
Homemade lemonade to drink.

Thanks Kev. His Dad is really good to us.
My Dad wasnt much so I appreciate his Dad even more. I got lucky when it came to my father in law that is for sure. He is not the kind of person to say much about how he feels about anyone but he tells other people. Jon's aunt and uncles tell me all the time that my FIL always tells them anytime I cook him something.
A few years ago he went to his lawyer and had his will changed. Before it had stated that if something happend to Jon his inheritance would go to his brother and his brothers kids. His Mom's will is the same way. My FIL had his changed so that if something happens to Jon his inheritance would come to me. He said a whole lot when he did that.
Before he retired he worked some long hours at the ham plant here in town. About twice a week I would cook a big pot of something or a meatloaf and leave it for his dinner. He never said anything to me one way or the other about it but Jon's aunt says he told her about it everytime it happened. I am making lots of extra for tomorrow so he will have leftovers for a few days. I smoked about 30 or so chicken wings drummets. I smoked a 10 pound pork butt in the smoker for a couple hours them popped it into the crockpot. I want it to cook til it falls apart so I can shred it.

I have the pie and biscuits made. The biscuits are in a ziploc bag and will warm up fine. The wings are smoked. I'll get a good caramelized bbq glaze on them tomorrow. I'm gonna run down to the store in the morning and get some coleslaw and the stuff for the baked beans. Luckily I have everything else. I got a little carried away the other day at Walmart with how many strawberries I bought lol. They were on sale $1.50 a package.

He enjoyed his dinner. I left him all of the leftovers.
I took everything I listed and stopped by the deli and bought coleslaw, potato salad & soft chocolate chip cookies.
He should have leftovers for a few days.

Thank you Nan.

His Dad deserves it. He loves spinach and had like a couple pounds of it ready in the garden. He told me to go pick it and I told him I wasnt taking the spinach cause I know it is his favorite. He said he wanted me to have it so in a few days when he has all the leftovers eaten Im gonna make him some creamed spinach and maybe a rotisserie chicken. The spinach will be fine in the fridge til then.
