Tonight is an easy night for me. We are having Chilli dogs!! My favorite chili to use is BUNKER HILL. IT IS THE BOMB!! I first tasted it at one of those sample tables at Sam's Club. We are gonna have Chili dogs with chips. Oh and Iced tea. Gotta love iced tea!

About a month ago I found an excellent chicken hot dog at a local organic food store. The name is Shelton's cooked uncured chicken franks. No nitrates or nitrites. Since they're uncured they have to stay frozen until time to cook. But they're delicious and not loaded with fat.

I took a nutrition class is college and the professor called hot dogs 'fat dogs'. I'm sure they're okay for occasional consumption, but the 36% fat per dog scared be after that class. The chicken dogs state 10% dv per dog and they are smaller then regular hot dogs and they do make a killer chili dog.

A friend of ours swears by the Omaha Steaks hot dogs. But at $10.00 for 4, we weren't impressed. Omaha Steaks does offer them for free with a fillet Mignon order.

fat

whoa that is alot of fat , thanks for that information

We buy chicken dogs all the time now. I haven't been brave enough to try them yet as I don't even like hot dogs. CostCo seems to have different varieties available so we buy them there and it's nice to be able to tell the four year old, "Here, have a hot dog." and not worry about all the fat in regular hot dogs.

and it's not just the fat in the hot dogs. The sodium nitrate and sodium nitrite are both unknown health risks. But they prevent many food bourne diseases so are allowed to be used by the FDA. These are known generally known as saltpeter.

Peacherina, if you love chili dogs you really must try our version of chili dogs. We make a batch of chili using French's Original Chili-O seasoning mix and have chili one night for dinner. The French's Chili-O is the easiest and best tasting prepared chili seasoning mix that we have ever had. The next night we use the left over chili to make chili dogs. We do recommend omitting the kidney beans if you wan to make the chili dogs with the leftovers. The kidney beans are a bit lumpy for the chili dogs.

french's

thanks for that tip about the french's I will have to try that.

A college friend of mine always used to say, if a chili dog is made right, it cannot be picked up and must be eaten with a fork. Sounds about right to me. :D

I agree...it seems that (even though usually bad for you) sloppy/messy food coincides with great taste. If you cant pick it up, then is must be good...like a burger that is too messy to pick up.

you know on a show one day they were showing the best burgers in America and I saw a couple that were like that really messy. They looked so good.

Lol.....reminds me of a pretty good burger joint near my work. It is called Burger Island. It is relatively small and sort of run-down looking, but they have great burgers. These burgers are huge....they are right around (guessing) 6 inches diameter and about 3 inches thick from top to bottom. They have one that is a Pizza burger...they use Mozerella cheese and marinara sauce, grilled onions....oh SO MESSY, but good.

I've never had a chili dog- how do you make it? Just pour the chili on the dogs? Could I use brats for this? I don't have an hot dogs.

Yep, just pour the chili on. I suppose you could use brats; I've never tried that, but aren't brats too fat for hot dog buns?

Also you want to sprinkle on some shredded cheese and also onions if you like.

Chili Dogs are great. I like mine with mayo on the bun, chilli on top and then with onions sprinkled on top of the chilli. Onion rings to the side . And a nice pepsi. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmm

BagCSC - Oh you just brought back a wonderful childhood treat that I had completely forgotten about. We used to make pizza burgers as a special treat when me and my sister were growing up. We made them just like you described with the addition of toasting the buns first. They tasted so good!! I will have to make them again and see if they still as good now that I am older.

Those pizza burgers sound so yummy, I bet my little boy would love them. He's all about pizza these days.

:) :) :)
Glad I could help. I really enjoy the comfort foods that I grew up with also. It brings back so many memories of my childhood.

I love chili dogs! They are so good. My mom hates them, so I never had them until I got married. I admit, I thought they sounded gross when my husband 1st asked me if I ever had them. LOL But then he made them for me & I loved them.
