How long is butter good for?

How long is it wise to keep commercially produced butter or butter/oil products in the fridge? Today, amidst sighs and tears, I disposed of a pound and 1/2 of butter (in stick form) which I'd had for what I was afraid might be too long. Cleaning out your fridge and purging contents can certainly bring tears to your eyes, can't it? My kids seem to think that anything with an expiration date three days prior to when they discover it is OUT!! Incidently, I never did find any expiration dates on the two containers of butter I finally tossed. Wonder where they hid it.

I stock up on butter when on sale, And into the freezer it goes. My thoughts, I don't pay a whole lot of attention to expiration dates. Except when buying the product. When using, if it taste good eat it. CF

I freeze butter all the time - unsalted butter goes rancid fast - salted butter doesn't because the salt is a preservative.

Thanks Mama and CF - It never crossed my mind to freeze butter - it certainly will from now on. Trouble is, my freezer is not the size or type to encourage freezing anythng more than the base necessities - whifch explains why I never thought of it.
