I went to the Kraft Website...

That site put a nice little bunch of spyware and addware on my pc.
I closed the site and went back to my desktop and as soon as I did I started getting adds popping up for their products.
I ran my tracks eraser program and it kept telling me my Internet Explorer was still running even after I closed it :mad:

Sure enough I looked under Temp and Temp Internet on my hard drive and there was two files/folders that it wouldnt let me delete. I had Jon unplug my internet THEN I was able to delete the files. Restarted the computer and now they are gone.

Their website tried to get me :(

All I wanted was a surejell recipe for strawberry/peach jam lol.

SURE-JELL EASY STRAWBERRY JAM

1 box Sure-Jell Fruit Pectin
4 c. sugar
2 c. crushed strawberries
3/4 c. water

1. Mix strawberries and sugar thoroughly. Set aside 10 minutes.
2. Stir Sure-Jell with water in saucepan. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly. Boil 1 minute. Remove from heat.

3. Stir mixtures together until sugar is completely dissolved and no longer grainy. Pour into plastic containers; cover. Let stand at room temperature 24 hours. Jam is now ready to use. Store in refrigerator or freeze extra containers. Thaw in refrigerator. Makes about 4 (1 cup) containers.


LIGHT STRAWBERRY JAM (1/3 less sugar) :

1 box Sure-Jell Light Fruit Pectin
3 1/4 c. sugar, divided
4 c. crushed strawberries

1. Combine Sure-Jell Light Fruit Pectin with 1/4 cup of the sugar.
2. Add pectin mixture gradually to fruit, stirring vigorously. Set aside for 30 minutes; stirring occasionally.

3. Stir remaining sugar gradually into fruit mixture until sugar is completely dissolved and no longer grainy. Pour into plastic containers; cover. Let stand at room temperature for 24 hours. Jam is now ready to use. Store in refrigerator or freeze extra containers. Thaw in refrigerator. Makes about 6 (1 cup) containers.

Important: Measure sugar and fruit exactly; do not change amounts or jam will not set properly. A potato mashed works best for strawberries.



Five-flavor Peach Freezer Jam (freezer Jam Pectin)

1½ Cups Granulated Sugar
1 Pouch (45 G) Bernardin Freezer Jam Pectin
4 Cups Crushed Peaches
2 Tsp Bottled Lemon Juice


Flavor Variations Per 8 Oz (250 Ml) Jar:

1½ Tsp Crème De Cacao Or Amaretto
½ Tsp Finely Grated Orange Zest
1/8 Tsp Ground Cinnamon
1/16 Tsp Almond Extract
10 Mint Leaves, Thoroughly Bruised With Back Of Spoon
(do Not Tear)


Wash & Rinse 5 X 250 Ml Mason Jars & Bernardin Storage Or 2-piece Snap Lids.

In Mixing Bowl, Stir Together Sugar & Freezer Jam Pectin Until Well Mixed.

Blanch & Pit Peaches; Thoroughly Crush & Measure 4 Cups.

Add Peaches & Lemon Juice To Pectin-sugar Mixture; Stir 3 Minutes.

For All Variations Except For Mint, Ladle Jam Into Clean 250 Ml Mason Jars To Within ½ Inch Of Top Rim (headspace). Add One Flavour Choice To Each Jar & Stir Well.

For Mint, Leave Remaining Jam In Bowl; Add Bruised Mint Leaves. Stir Constantly 2 Minutes; Remove Leaves. Ladle Jam Into Jars.

Wipe Jar Rims Removing Any Stickiness. Apply Lids Tightly.

Let Stand, About 30 Minutes, Until Thickened. Freeze Up To 1 Year; Refrigerate Up To 3 Weeks Or Serve Right Away.


Makes About 5 X 250 Ml Jars.

Note: Splenda* No Calorie Sweetener May Be Substituted For The Granulated Sugar. Use The Same Quantity Of Splenda As Directed For Granulated Sugar. Other Artificial Sweeteners Are Not Suitable Substitutes.



NO COOK PEACH FREEZER JAM

2 1/4 c. prepared peaches
2 tbsp. lemon juice
5 c. sugar
1 box Sure Jell

Peel and pit peaches. Grind or finely chop fruit. Measure 2 1/4 cups into large bowl. Add the lemon juice.
Mix 3/4 cup water and Sure Jell in small saucepan. Bring to a full boil and boil 1 minute, stirring constantly.

At once stir into fruit. Continue stirring 3 minutes. A few sugar crystals will remain.

Immediately ladle into containers, leaving 1/2" space at top. With a damp cloth, wipe any spills from containers. Cover at once with lids. Let stand at room temperature 24 hours.

Store jam in freezer. Small amounts may be covered and kept in the refrigerator.

Wash, scald and drain containers and lids, or use automatic dish washer with very hot rinse water.
 
As a web developer I should point some things out here..

"Web Sites" do not put spyware on your PC. Users put spyware on their PCs. The only way you get spyware is by installing software, not by browsing. A website cannot install software on your PC without permission by you. You have to either say yes when it prompts you to install an active X plugin (which after checking the Kraft website, no such thing exists there) or download some kind of software from the site, and then click to install it.

I think that chances are, you already had spyware/adware in the machine and it was waiting for you to browse somewhere that matched a profile for ads it was ready to serve. As soon as you hit Kraft, it basically said to itself "hey, we have some kraft ads here" and then showed them to you.

Furthermore, you will find ads again as soon as you hit another site that matches yet another profile. Run anti-spyware software on your PC and that should get rid of it.
 
I disagree Jafo. The only thing I download from websites are recipes. I do not click to download and install any software. My little sister is also a web developer.
Jon and I repair/build and program computers for people. Jon is an assistive technology instructor. The schools around here hire him when ever they have a visually impaired student. Jon can rip a computer apart down to the case and put it back together and the guy is blind.

I know active x leaves computers open to picking up spyware and addware but some websites are unusable without it. Im running a very up to date antivirus ...which I obviously need to switch. Im running SpySweeper, Tracks Eraser, XoftSpy, Malware Scanner and 2 different firewalls. I had updated my antivirus to a newer version of Kaspersky a few months ago and it is not protecting me as well as the old version. This makes twice I have gotten busted by this sort of thing.

You do have websites install the spyware/addware on your pc through the door left open via active x when you visit some sites. Kaspersky asks me about some sites when Im surfing but it is obviously letting some get through. But you DO get spyware/addware from websites and you do not have to click to install them. Active x controlls allow them to put the junk into your temp and temp internet files. Jon has active x disabled and he has never had a problem with this sort of thing.

I remember the good old days when you had to open a file to get a virus/addware. Now you get them from surfing.

You're very welcomed! I've got tons of recipes - so instead of collecting spyware - give me a holler first. If I've got it - I'll share it.

You are ALWAYS prompted to install an activeX program, if you are not prompted then either you have actively disabled this checking in IE, or you already have some sort of trojan/spyware installed that is disabling the prompt.

If you were as protected as you say, this thread would have never been started. Obviously something is inside. I run minimal AV and anti-spyware yet Kraft did not install on my PC.. They are a huge corporation and are not going to bother with such slime tactics.

Again, this is incorrect. You already have a problem if ANY active X program can execute without your permission. You could have picked up a million different spyware packages by now.

Only if you are already vulnerable. Your door needs to have been opened first.

I have been building and repairing computers since about 1985, and continue to develop/modify online applications. This is part of what I do for a living.

Your data needs to be first, backed up, second, scanned thoroughly, and if the problem persists (i.e. active X is still installing without your perms), you need to wipe out the hard drive, reinstall your OS, immediately check for boot sector viruses/trojans, and systematically re-install your software.

Sorry, but this is not Krafts fault, they did not install any spyware on your machine. I have checked the site myself and there is nothing there to do it.

janie and Jafo- can I trouble you w/ a computer question that others seem unable to answer?

Starting last June, frequently, an e-mail advertizing an electronics sales site get mass-mailed to many from my hotmail address.

At first, it was going out to all in my address book. This concerned me, so I purged my address book so as not to keep burdening my friends and family with these annoying messages, and I didn't use hotmail for a month.

When I returned and gradually started compiling an address book again, after a good month or so, the mass-mailings started-up again, but this time they're not being sent to folks in my address book- rather to dozens of addresses of folks I don't even know.

Some mornings my "sent" file is full of 100 or more sent messages all to addresses I am unfamiliar with.

I am told this is not a virus- so there isn't that fear. But, still...

What to do? Any advice is much appreciated! smiles- k.
 
Someone may have hacked your hotmail Kevin.
Have you tried changing the password to your account?
 
I agree, either someone hacked your Hotmail account, or are you using a mail client like Outlook Express to use Hotmail? If so, you may have a virus/trojan that is accessing your Outlook address book and using that to mail people.
 
If someone has hacked your hotmail then changing the pass should fix it.
If you have a virus/trojan accessing the account you have bigger problems.

A friend of ours uses hotmail but he has it set up to come through Outlook Express. His account started doing the same thing. Even sending emails to me because I was in his address book. When Jon and I got the computer he did turn out to have a trojan downloader. The one he had was actually downloading other things onto his system when ever he had an internet connection plus mailing every address it could find. By the time we ran software to get rid of it he had like 400 pieces of spyware/addware and viruses according to one program.
 
I made 13 small jars of this recipe tonight.
It tasted so good I wanted to share it.

Strawberry and Peach Jam

8 half pints
1 (1 lb) box frozen sliced strawberries, thawed
2 1/4 cups peaches, peeled and chopped
5 cups sugar
1 (1 3/4 ounce) box powdered fruit pectin

Measure strawberries and place in large saucepan.
(There should be about 1 3/4 cups.) Peel and pit about 2 1/2 pounds fully ripe peaches.
Crush thoroughly.
Add enough peaches (about 2 1/4 cups) to strawberries to make 4 cups fruit.
Measure sugar and set aside.
Place saucepan holding fruit over high heat.
Add fruit pectin and stir until mixture comes to a hard boil. At once stir in sugar.
Bring to a full rolling boil and boil hard, one minute, stirring constantly.
Remove from heat, skim and ladle quickly into hot sterilized glasses.
Process for 10 mins in hot water bath. Makes 8 (6 oz.) glasses.
 
I going to make this one tomorrow. My FIL loves honey and lemon together.


Honey Lemon Marmalade

1 hr Total Time:
3 hr 40 minMakes:

About 5 (1-cup) jars or 80 servings, 1 Tbsp. each
3 cups prepared fruit (buy 7 lemons)
1-1/2 cups water
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 box SURE.JELL Fruit Pectin
1/2 tsp. butter or margarine
2 cups sugar, measured into separate bowl
2 cups honey

BRING boiling-water canner, half full with water, to simmer.
Wash jars and screw bands in hot soapy water.
Pour boiling water over flat lids in saucepan off the heat.
Let stand in hot water until ready to use. Drain jars well before filling.

REMOVE colored part of peel from lemons using vegetable peeler; chop peel and set aside.
Peel and discard remaining white part of peel from lemons.
Chop lemons, reserving any juice; set aside. Place peels, water and baking soda in large saucepan.
Bring to boil. Reduce heat; cover. Simmer 10 min, stirring occasionally.
Add chopped lemons and reserved juice; cover. Simmer an additional 20 min.

MEASURE exactly 3 cups prepared fruit into 6- or 8-qt. saucepot.
Stir in pectin.
Add butter to reduce foaming.
Bring to full rolling boil (a boil that doesn't stop bubbling when stirred) on high heat, stirring constantly.
Add sugar and honey; stir.
Return to full rolling boil and boil exactly 1 min., stirring constantly.
Remove from heat. Skim off any foam with metal spoon.
LADLE immediately into prepared jars, filling to within 1/8 inch of tops.
Wipe jar rims and threads.
Cover with two-piece lids. Screw bands tightly.
Place jars on elevated rack in canner. Lower rack into canner.
(Water must cover jars by 1 to 2 inches. Add boiling water, if necessary.) \
Cover; bring water to gentle boil. Process 5 min.
Remove jars and place upright on a towel to cool completely.
After jars cool, check seals by pressing middles of lids with finger.
(If lids spring back, lids are not sealed and refrigeration is necessary.)
 
I think it will be nice around the holidays to take friends and family a nice fresh loaf of bread and a jar of yummy jam or marmalade. I found some cute little plaid ribbons at Big Lots yesterday to dress up the tops a little.
