Crust: Ingredients -
4 cups flour
3 tsp baking powder
1 C butter
1 tsp. salt
1/2 - 1 C milk
Directions:
Sift flour, baking powder and salt
Chop butter in finely
Add milk to make a dough that can be handled
Divide the dough into fourths and roll thin
Cut into strips 3"x 4"
Meat: Ingredients -
2 lbs pork (with bit of fat in)
1/2 lb ground beef
1/2 C bread or rusk crumbs
salt and pepper to taste
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
scant 1/4 tsp each, connamon, ground cloves and ginger
Directions:
Mix finely ground meat, bread crumbs, seasonings (fry smalll bits to test for seasoning)
Roll meat into small sausage-like rolls 3" long
Wrap sausage-like rolls with the strips of dough. Seal well.
Brush tops with beaten egg or cream.
Bake 1 to 2 inches apart on a greased baking sheet in a medium oven (375 degrees) for about 30 minutes. In Holland they bake them on paper grocery sacks - I've no idea why.
You can also make these with commercial frozen puff pastry for the "lazy woman's" version
Serve warm
Can be frozen before or after baking
I've taken these to get-togethers and Dutch festivals and they disappear within moments of putting them on the table........
