Kmart Story

About ten years ago when Jon and I were just dating I had gone with my little sister to Kmart here in town. She needed school supplies and I wanted to get a gift for Jon.
Well when we get to the register there is a strong odor coming from the ac that burned the throat and made your eyes water. We were the only ones in line so I told my sister to go outside and wait on me. I thought maybe it was just me over reacting. Plus I really wanted to get Jons gift. I got outside and I was coughing really bad and I threw up just outside the door. An older woman with her daughter and grandaughter was on their way to the door and I told them to stop and not take the baby in there. My sister was coughing really bad too and sick. We got in the car and I drove to my older sisters who was just about 1/2 a mile from the store. My older sis could see we were both really sick and having trouble breathing so she called 911 and explained what had happened. WELL by that time we hear all kinds of sirens and screaming on there way to Kmart. The 911 operator explained there was some sort of toxic leak from Kmarts ac and we needed to go to the hospital. They were sending an ambulance for us. All total I think they said 45-50 people had to go to the hosp that day.
To make a long story short ten years later Jon and I go into the same Kmart and they are guys in there handing out papers inside the store with what to do on them in case of emergency. Like if hazardous material have been released. I told Jon Kmart was kind of a strange place to hand out that material and he stops and looks at me... I thought for a minute and go oh yeah! This is the perfect place for it lol.

My sister and I were treated and released.
They kept us for like 6 hours. We were on oxygen and they gave us several breathing treatments. They told us to follow up with our regular docs. I got more of it than my sis. Other than a scratchy throat for a few days I was fine.
Our Kmart claimed later someone had released a can of pepper spray into the ac. I talked to an employee who worked there at the time and he told us in confidence that the air conditioner had leaked coolant. They tried to get out of paying our hospital bills til Jon threatened to sue. Then they took care of the bill. Friends who have worked there say they have always had problems with the ac at that location. I ran into the paramedic who took care of us later and she said we should sue. I told her I wasnt interested. We had no long term problems and they took are of the bill lol.
What happened that day does cross my mind when ever I go there though lol.

Aw hell Janie just get it over with and sue 'em, you never know how many years inhaling that crap took off your life!:D Everyone and their neighbor is suit happy these days, get on board girl.... LOL!

On a serious note; I'll bet that was a very scarey ordeal, thank God you did not die!

It was scary at the time. Im still not sure exactly what we inhaled.

I remember being mortified about throwing up in public lol. I tried to make it to the trash can but didnt quiet get there
I had told my older sis to get ahold of Jon and let him know what happened. I remember while I was laying in the hosp bed seeing Jon come around the corner like 20 min later being led by one of his friends. They had taken the interstate to get there. His buddy flipped on the emergency flashers and did 125mph all the way. Our Mom had the neighbor bring her over. They left before Jon and his buddy and got there about 25 min after they did lol. Jons buddy was about five feet three and is a shaggy looking little guy. I remember thinking here comes my knight is shining armor with his shetland pony.
