Land of the Midnight Sun: Happy Solstice!

One of the things I most enjoyed about my years in Alaska was that due to the severe and extreme summer-time daylight hours, Summer Solstice- or June 21st- was always a huge deal. This day is the longest of the year and there was/is always lotsa fun partying going on in the woods, at the rivers, up in the mountains, and along the rocky shorelines of island beaches. Something about salmonbakes, crab-boils, clambakes and weenie roasts in the bright sun of midnight was just always a blast... so Happy Solstice to you all! :)

Oh yeah - mama is going to go naked! NOT! geez - ya know - I hope they all get bit by ticks in "parts" that should be covered!

I love the solstice. The warm long day then the cool night lit by fireflys. It will be just me and hubby out on the porch with a bottle of wine. It's bittersweet though because it means from this point on we are on the inevitable down turn back toward winter.

please - don't even talk about winter right now - it's so nice out there and I want it to last for a while

Solstice schmolist!!! It's just smoldering hot here and I wish it weren't going to be a freaking long day:eek:

Sorry to be a party pooper guys but I will be hanging indoors and doing some painting on a watercolor I am working on;) Hey if we did not have A/C I might be painting Naked hee-hee:D I always did cherish the idea of one day transforming into the "eccentric artist" that lives down the block!

P.S. Now you guys keep your opinions on me to yourself!!! I can hear it now..."transforming into an eccentric, duh...doesn't she know she already is!" LOL

The only thing and I mean the only thing I like about summer is the fresh veggies. Especially tomatoes and basil. I hate the hot weather!

Janie you hate hot weather like I hate the cold. The big difference is I hate the bugs that the summer brings out! Heat I can deal with, the bugs ugh!!!

I love the warm weather and I can even take most of the bugs. I do hate the beetles that bore into my zucchini stems though and we get so many house flies buzzing around in the yard. I don't know where they all come from. If you have the door open for a minute 20 will fly in and I have to spend the rest of the day catching them.

Bugs? I haven't even seen a skeeter yet, not that I'm complaining mind you. While I do celebrate the solstices and equinoxes I'm waiting for some longer nights. It's a bit of a drag having to wait til 9 oclock to do anything with the telescope.

quit cooking - flies are attracted to smells - don't cook and they won't come in - LOL - I hate flies - period. if one comes in I'll chase him forever to get him back out.

there's a site for getting rid of things -

helpgetridof.com

for bugs, pests, etc.

I sympathize. I sometimes have to put a small fan in my kitchen window when I use my stovetop smoker. I always use the smoker later at night when it cooled down outside and the bug fly in like crazy while that window is up. I keep meaning to get a piece of screen of some sort. They have lights all over the balcony that attract bugs like crazy.

You can staple a piece of screen in place. You know the mosquitos are horrid, a reason I did not mind not having a garden this season. I am waiting until fall, and will probably put in a fall garden.

Few things turn me from happy & smiling to grumpy- but yuchy summer STICKY weather will make me go from "mild-mannered" to "whacko crab-azz" in no time flat! :)

Our weather had been unseasonably mild- nice, in fact! But this weekend it took a severe turn. Now it's HOT & STICKY. That awful stuff that doesn't usually come 'til "the dawg days of August"! UGH. I sure hope this crap don't last all summer long. I'm not a fan of the super-hot stuff... especially when paired w/ drastic high humidity. I hate going outside and finding the air so stifling I can hardly beathe in! Today it was already 84 at 8:00AM and 92 at 9:30. And so humid you could slice the air w/ a dull butter-knife. YUCH!
