Sis and I spoke this morning and this will be our Mom's first Mother's Day living her "new life" in a new apartment just moments from our homes. So we wanna celebrate "in the neighborhood" somehow. The forecast here is great for the weekend, so we're planning a picnic at nearby Miller Park. The entire park is lovely, and there are foot-paths and an arched stone bridge surrounded by flowering trees and shrubs and a fish pond that Mom particularly likes to watch the ducks/geese/swans at. And nearby is a beautiful historic old pavillion w/ carved posts and beams, cherubs, fawns, squirrels and bunnies and such.
We're gonna plan a cook-out there. I'm taking chicken breasts and shrimp skewers to grill, pimiento cheese spread/crackers and an herbed cottage cheese dip w/ crudite (both recipes from my new "Frank Stitt's Southern Table" cookbook), and smoked-salmon tabbouleh. Sis will bring pea-salad, fresh fruit bowl and blondies.
A FOOD-UNRELATED QUESTION: Mom never wore perfume for years (part of one of her mental illness thangs that would trigger troublesome craziness!) but lately she's mentioned wanting to wear some. My sister's whole family has allergies and none of them use it, so she knows little about it. Can someone suggest an inexpensive, subtle bottle to get her- something nice but simple to ease her into it?
