To Mama - Last night I chanced onto the link to "Mama's Kitchen" and spent a grand total of six hours reading and absolutely wallowing in memories and, as well, learning things everyone ought to know - and just about nobody does!
First I read through what you'd had to say about what supermarkets do to foods they "prepare in store" and what the conglomerates are doing to the products our mothers used to "swear by". God, it made me totally sick! Thanks to you, Mama, I'm going to be shopping much differently in the days, weeks and years to come and feeding my family much healthier foods. I've been making my own bread for many years but that was pretty much the extent of my "homemade" fare - things (sauces, baking mixes, jams, jellies, fruits and even veggies) could always be purchased so much more quickly at the supermarket. I most wonder my husband and my sons managed to live through it!
Then I read with the greatest pleasure your memories of the milkman (I also remember the glass milk bottles with the cream freezing and popping out the top of the bottle on a cold winter's morning) and we also had a "bread man" who came around twice-weekly. Plus the man who peddled the veggies and fruits which he grew himself and I also recall the five and dime stores with the lunch counters and places like Robert Halls and Sears and Roebucks. God, the memories. Thank you for the best six hours I've had in literally years! And this is only the beginning - I plan to read Mama's Kitchen much, much more and learn from the best! I'm absolutely gobsmacked and in awe!!
