Bassbousa is a delicious rich dessert
Ingredients in Bassbousa
- 4 cups farina
- 3/4 lb unsalted butter
- 1 1/4 cup milk
- 4 cups sugar
- 1 cup coconut
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 2 cups water
- 2 tsp lemon juice
- Almonds
To make Bassbousa
- Warm the milk; melt the butter very hot.
- Stir the butter into the farina.
- Stir in the warmed milk
- Add the coconut, 1 cup sugar and the baking powder and mix well.
- Butter a large (9" x 13") Pyrex baking dish and spread the mixture in it evenly.
- Cut into small squares and place an almond on each square.
- Set aside for 30 minutes.
- Meanwhile, make a syrup by dissolving 3 cups of sugar in boiling water and stirring constantly. Add the lemon juice and boil for 1 minute; then set aside to cool.
- Preheat oven to 350° F.
- Bake Bassbousa for approximately 45 minutes or until is is a golden brown color.
- When the farina mixture is removed from oven, pour the cooled syrup over top.
- Serve when cool.
