I absolutely LOVE my automatic dishwashers, I really think the dishes come out sanitized as there's NO WAY could I ever put my hands in water that HOT!!!

You are 100% correct about that Big "D"!!! It does make a difference. I simply am spoiled and will never go back to hand washing dishes...EVER! My fiance he was determined to continue washing by hand and he stuck to that for quite a long time
, then as time went by he gradually got to liking not having to wash, dry, and put away every time. Now he unloads in the day and I load and set the clean cycle every night!

I STILL wash dishes by hand. Just did earlier today.
I mainly use the machine when I cook. That way, the dirty dishes can go right in the machine and when it's full, I wheel it over to the sink, hook it up and turn it on.
I love to cook, but I hate the cleanup! Especially if a big dinner is made, so I don't do big dinners now. Takes too much out of me, as I was diagnosed with congestive heart failure, so I can't overtax myself too much.
But I DO make simple small meals or one-pot meals which I like a lot!

Thank God we can cook in so many ways -Big meals - small meals - quick meals - very intense and complicated meals - easy meals...etc. that is one of the things I so love about cooking!!! It is versatile and you can change it up however you like!
I hate to hear you have a heart condition, glad you can take it easy and still enjoy being in the kitchen!

I personally find dishwashers a nearly-worthless contraption. I do recognize they are great for sanitizing- but that's about the extent of their value to me. I have a dishwasher in my condo- but I store large bowls and platters in it... Have never used it even once in 7 years!
Here's a controversial thought I'll throw out to try and stir things up with: I believe dishwashers are inventions of men to fool and wrongly/falsely con women to believe that they (the men) have an simpathetic/empathetic desire to see the work-load of housewives reduced! What a lie!
Dishwashers increase work! They turn a 10-minute task into a 90-minute chore! In the time it takes to wash one load in a dishwasher- I can hand-wash that load, prepare, eat and cleanup after ANOTHER whole meal... AND take a nap! Ha!

I wouldn't want a dishwasher - it takes up the space of a cupboard and the cupboard space is much more valuable than a dishwasher that will eventually leak, rot out the floor, etc. and then cost you $800 in plumbing fees to fix for the next 6 months.
Personally - I don't like to do dishes. but as soon as a meal is complete - those dishes are washed, dried and put away - everything. Table, counter, stove - all washed. then my kitchen is clean at all times. But I still wouldn't want a dishwasher - leftie and rightie would get jealous! LOL

Dishwashers, to me, can be a joy or a pain.
Like anything else that you'd contemplate getting, you have to do some shopping around so that you don't get taken for a ride and end up with a piece of junk.
I've NEVER had a problem getting the dishes clean in mine. One time, I loaded the machine with the dirtiest dishes that had caked-on and cook-on food residue. I was up late cleaning the kitchen after a big dinner.
Too tired to even turn the machine on, I went to bed because I had to go to work early the next morning. I turned the machine on that afternoon when I got back home. And I just couldn't believe it!! All that cake-on greasy food residue came right off!! I was amazed!
And the dishes were sanitized as well.

I have never owned a Dishwasher.But I want one ! My leftie and Rightie get tired of washing dishes.

MamaM whoever in the world told you that bunch of hog wash?!? I have had a dishwasher since 1987 and I would never be without one, especially during the holidays. They simply go out when they are broken, maybe occassionally there will be a machine that will leak, but gosh you fix it immediately or get a new machine! You never leave it sitting there leaking long enough to rot your floor for crying out loud! Now I personally feel like I love the savings in water from using them, I use a heck of alot more water washing by hand, I also love the time I save, and I love the fact that they are sterile when done washing. Just my opinion but I love all those reasons enough to love my dishwasher!!! Lefty and Righty dry right out and crack and bleed from my dry skin condition when I hand wash as well, and I like not having the cracks in my fingers that are so painful. And in all those years I have only had 1 go out on me, and need replacing! Not bad in 21 yrs. And a new dishwasher only costs about $500.00 brand new if you shop around, not bad in my opinion!

And also MamaM if you ever do change your mind and decide to get one I highly recommend a Maytag, they are the very best there is!!! Maytag appliances are simply top of the line, and I swear by them! I dislike Kenmore, they used to be great way back when, now they are all junk!!! I have had nothing but bad experiences with Kenmore in the past 12 years, so I swapped to Maytag and have been very satisifed and pleased with their products! I doubt you will change your mind, but just in case I wanted to give you a little "heads up"!

You DO save tons of water by doing the dishes in the machine than you would when washing them by hand. And I don't know of ANYONE who turns off the faucet between rinsing each and every dish when washing them by hand. I don't!
I've had three so far. The first one only lasted about a little over a year. Crap. You get what you pay for in THIS case!
The 2nd one which was a K'Aid portable machine, lasted a bit over 16 years. The motor began to go south, making a horrible rasping sound that went right through me!! Had to go!! Got more than my money's worth out of it though!
All of which brings me to the present one. It's truly a doll!! I like it! It's eight years old and STILL going strong! I like the fact that it raises the temp of the water in the main wash and final rinse. Gives me the satisfaction knowing that all that grease and grime on the dishes has been put to bed and that they are clean and free of bacteria and germs!! Love it, love it, love it!
Mama, all those conspiracy theories that you've heard about having a dishwasher aren't really true at all. Like CCC said, if there's a leak, you get it fixed long before it becomes an expensive disaster. All the machines that I've had, none, and I mean NONE of them had ever leaked at all. Not even the present one.
Put those theories to bed. You shouldn't let ANY of them stop you from wanting a dishwasher! Built-in or portable, none of them take up any more than 24 inches of floor space.

Mine is a Maytag also!
But now, it matters none if you get a Kenmore, Whirlpool, Maytag, Jennair, K'Aid, Estate, Inglis or Roper, because they ALL come out of the same factory; Whirlpool.
GE is good also. Just don't get the low-end Kenmore units. These are all Frigidaire look-alikes, and Frigidaire, Kelvinator, Gibson and Westinghouse are all no good. They're 100% PURE UNADULTERATED JUNK!!

Sorry - for years I've had friends that ended up with too many problems from them. lazy landlords that don't get them fixed, etc. I would much rather have the cupboard space than a dishwasher. Although I must say - one of my friends has one that sits in the middle of the kitchen floor (there is no room for it at all) and they just keep rolling it around the kitchen all day till they hook it up and use it.

I take it that's a portable machine that you're talking about.
Well, try to enquire through some friends who might have one and get THEIR input, at least. I couldn't do without mine - especially when it comes to cleaning up after big meals!! Pots & pans and dinnerware go right in and come out really clean!!!

I appreciate both sides of the argument- but I lean more towards mama with this one.
Personally- I may be weird, but I don't MIND washing dishes. In fact, in commercial kitchens after surviving a hectic holiday brunch or a particularly stressful BUSY Saturday night, I was oft-known to camp myself at the pot-sink and just scrub steam-table pans and broiler racks for an hour, just to relax and "come back down". To me it's brainless busy-work that helps me un-wind...
That said, I respect & appreciate the hell out of dishwahers in the work-place! In commercial kitchens whether it be a small rowdy back-room bar or a fancy uppidty country club- everyone highly values and takes care of the DMO (dish machine operator- or dishwasher!). Waitresess flirt with him and are constantly bringing him cool iced drinks and they often share their tips with him. Cooks give him the choicest food for his shift-meals and snacks... chefs send him home with a 4-pack of filet mignons and an apple pie for his family on his weekend-off, and the manager gives him fifty dollars cash and the night off on his anniversary! At holiday time when no on else gets a bonus from the GM- the chef gives the dishwasher a gift-card out of his own wallet... Dishwashers do nothing but yuchy grunt-work; they are the backbone of any kitchen and are under-paid, so it's important to show them they are valued. Good ones are few & far between, and they are worth their weight in GOLD, and ANYTHING one must do to KEEP a GOOD dishwasher- one does.
