Do you wear an apron?

Love aprons. I use them most of the time. Cause I too will make a complete mess out of myself

I have never worn an apron while I cook. I usually just keep a dish towel on the counter and wipe my hands on the dish towel as I cook. I probably would be better off using one when I am using flour since I always seem to get the flour on me when cooking.

I would be a mess from head to toe if I didn't wear an apron. They are so handy so easy to make.

I just tuck a dish towel into my belt to wipe my hands on. I probably should wear an apron but until I find appropriate and affordable fabric in my tartan to make one I'll just use the towel.

Bubba there is a place where you can special order an apron with your tartan on it! It is a place where Jafo (one of our members here at SP) recommended to me. I special ordered my husband his own apron from this place you may want to check it out, it is an on-line based business called Cafe Press! Jeff's cookbook (which I ordered was excellently done) and the very personalized apron I ordered was super terrific! My huband (at the time my fiance') was delighted to get it! So you may be able to get your own very special apron too:)

Good Luck, Cathy

Grandma's Apron

I had to really go back some years to find this. I thought it would be appropriate to post here.
IC

The principal use of Grandma's apron was to protect the dress underneath, but along with that, it served as a potholder for removing hot pans from the oven.

It was wonderful for drying children's tears, and on occasion was even used for cleaning out dirty ears.

From the chicken coop, the apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy chicks, and sometimes half-hatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven.

When company came, those aprons were ideal hiding places for shy kids.

And when the weather was cold, grandma wrapped it around her arms.

Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow, bent over the hot wood stove.
Chips and kindling wood were brought into the kitchen in that apron.

From the garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables. After the peas had been shelled, it carried out the hulls.

In the fall, the apron was used to bring in apples that had fallen from the trees.

When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how much furniture that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds.

When dinner was ready, Grandma walked out onto the porch, waved her apron, and the men knew it was time to come in from the fields to dinner.

It will be a long time before someone invents something that will replace

that "old-time apron" that served so many purposes.

REMEMBER:

Grandma used to set her hot baked apple pies on the window sill to cool.

Her granddaughters set theirs on the window sill to thaw.

At home I never wear an apron- but during my commercial cooking years- I felt naked unless I had one tied around my trunk!

A few months back, bored and looking for some sort of creative outlet, I thought custom-made aprons would be a neat money-maiking hobby, so I bought this book put out by the woman who makes aprons for the "stars" (I hear tell her aprons are used on "Desperate Housewives"...) and although the book is neat... I've yet to sew a stitch! Ha!

I don't ususally wear an apron. I'm actually a pretty tidy cook but if I have people coming I will wear one just in case to protect whatever I'm wearing. I have the cutest apron. It looks just like a halter top sundress. I love it.

Cathy, those aprons are 65% polyester. I wouldn't get near high heat or open flame wearing one.

Bubba,

You're right! I went and checked the one I purchased and it is 35% cotton &65% Polyester, oh well!

My problem with aprons is they feel restricting, and if I feel like I have a straight jacket on I am most miserable! I hate tight fitting ANYTHING give me loose and flowing and I am a happy camper!
