Brook & Cathy, you guys both continue to offer great brainstorming- thanks!
I love places w/ a small-town feel. I like big cities to visit- but I always want to return to a clean, quiet small place where I feel like a NAME and not a NUMBER. I've lived most of my life in rural areas and small towns- and in the case of Alaska, I lived at many locales where it was just me and 20 Okies & Texans, and except for many citters- not another beating heart for 800 miles!
I've got big city friends who are still of the mind-set that "from small towns come small minds". That ain't me, though. And my personal exeprience has been like yours- that most places these days exercise a certain healthy amount of acceptance of alternative types- and those who may not be exactly like them. Although I also know that a few scattered places DO exist where one really needs to use caution and even remain leery- those places ain't for me, neither!
Like I said- I ain't looking to wear my Cher outfit to a church-picnic... but it'd be nice to drive up in my pick-up with a date and not see the townfolk scatter like roaches, or holler like banshees! Hee-Hee! I'm all about neighborliness...
