I'm Glad it is Over.

I love the holidays but I am very glad they are over for this year.
Jon and I have had pizza and sandwiches for a few days. I am burned out on cooking for a bit. I made the big dinner for my brother and he didnt even come and get it til two days later. It was in my way in my small fridge while I was trying to get my husband's Dad's big family dinner together. I had two 20 pound turkeys and two 20 pound hams I was trying to work around. I had actually taken my brothers dinner and put it in a cooler in my car to get it out of my way. When he finally came and got it I was about to give it away to someone who needed it. I am not doing two Christmas dinners again that large. It is to hard and he cannot seem to come get them when I plan. He was two days or more late getting Thanksgiving dinner and Christmas. Thanksgiving wasnt so bad because I didnt have to make a big dinner for the rest of the family but during Christmas it was in my way. My kitchen is very small.
My father in law is getting older and cannot do as much to help me with the big family dinner. We had like 15 people total for the dinner. I should have made more of a few items than I did. It is hard never knowing how many your gonna have. My fil refuses to replace his stove so you have to cook everything here and haul it there. Honestly it would be a big help if someone would bring something when they come to eat like a dessert. Next year I think I am just going to order a sheet cake from the deli.
Not to mention the fact my fil gives me $50 to buy and ham and a turkey and what ever sides Im making all out of the $50. I end up spending alot of my own grocery budget for the month on the dinner.
I swear I wish I had never let any of them know I can cook. The only reason I do it at all is to help out my fil. Nexy year I think Im gonna tell everyone my stove is broken :(

Not over yet. We still have New Years. I always celebrate January 2. The official end of the holiday season but then we start the beginning of the tax season.

Not over yet. I always have a New Year's Day brunch for all my friends. After New Year's revelry you need a big breakfast and some hair of the dog.

Eveyone around here always has cabbage on New Years Day.
I can hide about any veggie in my hubby's food except peas. He can always detect that sweetness.

This New Year's I'm making a big turkey dinner with all the trimmings - why? In Thanksgiving that 2009 is finally over. Wasn't the best year for me - and I am so glad to see it go!

Well I got a new air conditioner in the apartment today. When they tore out the old one the wall behind it was covered in black mold. Now I know why my allergies and asthma have been so bad.

janie, I ceratinly identify with and feel your pain regarding a lot of what you share! I've been out of professional cooking so long now that although at times I miss, it... I have enjoyed enough quiet holidays at home without the stress and crowds that sometimes I can't believe I ever fed the masses and endured that craziness for so long! And even now when I DO cook at home- I find w/ each holiday and each event I scale-down more and more and limit the dishes, simplify more, etc. If I keep going at this rate, I figure by about 2012 when folks come over to eat the only thing on my table will be the salt & pepper shakers! :)

Just the thought of crowds you have endured makes me shudder lol.
I am really glad the big family thing is once a year. I made it much harder on myself by doing a big dinner for my brother to close to the inlaws family thing. Next time Ill know better.

Around here lately the Christmas holiday has been pretty much a PITA. Understand, I'm a Pagan and have been on the recieving end of lots of garbage about "stealing" THEIR holiday. This seems to have become an issue with certain Christian groups in the last couple years and I'm ever so glad when it's all over. Now, I've always been a live and let live kinda guy, but I'm beginning to wish we had lots more lions.

Funny, Bubba!

As a fellow "live & let live" sort, I happen to be a reformed Atheist (I've returned to the faith I was raised in). I have a healthy respect for freedom to choose what we believe in. I think folks of all faiths- and folks of no beliefs- ALL deserve respect and the ability to choose for themselves.

As a Chrsitian, I happen to be VERY hard on fellow Chrsitians at times, because I believe many (not all) Christians show a really poor example by judging, closed-mindedness, failure to allow others to enjoy the same freedom of choice they themselves benefit from, etc. I cannot stand hypocrites- be they Christian or otherwise...

I was raised in a tiny farm-town by very traditionally-minded folk, but being gay- and also, having cared for many dear ones of other races in my lifetime taught me that there are many in this world that are alienated for the whackiest, unfair reasons. FEAR is Chrsitianity's biggest enemy- and the biggest thing holding them (us) back.

While some Christians are good as gold- many aren't worth the spit it would take to seal a postage stamp to their forheads and mail them to some far-off locale!

Here's to ya, brother. Aim high and do good- no matter what your personal beliefs!

And Happy New Year to folks of ALL FAITHS- and those who right now just can't bring themselves to "fake" faith in anything at the present time! :):):)

As a Church going Christian I can say I have very good friends who have never darkened the door and, yes, there are some in church who are not the easiest to get along with. However, I will add that most of my friends do attend some church. But I never whine about athiest stealing my holiday at all. I believe marketing has.

I am a Christian and I think the biggest problem I see is being able to separate being able to love a sinner without condemning them. I am guilty of this as well at times. And yet Jesus readily accepted sinners regardless of who they were or what they did.

We have a very patient and loving God- and I suspect He rolls His eyes at us A LOT. And I believe many would be shocked to know that at times it's actually THEM that He's rolling His eyes at.

In the end I think most will be absolutely shocked to learn just what version of TRUTH is real- and what parts have been totally misunderstood and misperceived.

And I'll never believe that of all the people, and of all the churches, and of all the various faiths on this globe, that the pew I sit in- in the church that I go to- is the only one who knows the full real truth.

Here, here!

Ok - not to start something here - but this is what it is like where I live.

I am Italian. Brought up strict Italian with a solid Catholic background (you did everything the way God would do it) that was beaten into us (damn nuns!) to the point that my generation was brought up with nuns teaching us about mortal sin and that because Catholics are baptized to remove this sin after we are born, Protestants, etc. are not baptized as "Catholics" and therefore have mortal sins on their souls and will die and go to hell and any Catholic that befriends a Protestant will also go to hell with them.

God sits on his throne pounding His fist and condemning us for batting our eyelashes.

Today - most of those old biddies are dead - and I hope they are roasting in hell.

I have friends that come from all different religions and beliefs - and we respect each other.

What I do not like - and this is so true here - Christmas, Easter, Good Friday, etc. are the days that the Catholic Church is packed with the "Protestants" - as we call them - they are not good enough to attend services on any other days of the year - they just show their faces 2 or 3 times a year and try to "play the role".

You can always tell when it's a "Protestant's" Catholic holiday - there is no parking in the lot, the pews are packed, and these clowns have the audacity to recieve Communion yet! And as soon as they recieve the Host, they proceed to walk towards their seats but head right out the door! Then they make all kinds of noise and yak in the hallway because it is their annual tradition to see their fellow non-church-goers and all they have done is showed their faces. You hear their engines revving and off they go.

Parishioners like that have been known as "Protestants" for decades here - and this is in no way a reflection of anyone that practices the Protestant (or any other form of) religion.

They take your parking space, they take your pew, they wear false smiles, doze off during the mass, talk during the mass, and fidget until they can get out the door. Very distracting.

In truth - they should not be called "Protestants" - they should be called azzholes.

And I even think that our loving God shakes His head at these jerks.

BTW - I've been to many Protestant, Episcopal, etc. masses and I am godmother to several that are not my faith - but that didn't stop me from holding these precious angels in my arms and respecting their church and mass. One of my godsons has been brought up Jewish and Episcopalian - the faiths of both his parents. When he is ready he can make his choice. But these boys are now grown men with families of their own - so I don't know what their choices have been.

OMG I just spit water on the table when I read that. Toooooooooo funny!

I don't do religion. I went to religion private school for 3 years and was really turned away. And then when I got married to another non-believer, that tipped the barrel as well. My hubby's uncle is a Deacon in a Catholic church. Hubby wanted his uncle to be our officiant. So in order for us to be married by his uncle we had to endure these horrible, horrible marriage classes. And if we didn't pass the class, the Catholic church would not allow us to get married. Just horrible. We had to pretend that we had never slept together and these strangers told us how to have sex. It was really mortifying.

Being brought up so strict I had always wanted to be a Carmelite - cloistered - no talking, etc. and devote my life to God.

I wanted the old fashioned habit and all - but when Vatican II stepped in and changed the mass from Latin to English, etc. - I was turned off. then they took away the habits.

I taught in the Catholic and also Christian schools for years - even in an all boys high school run by the friars. And I even ran the tuition office for one of the top schools here and got to dine and rub elbows all day with the nuns. No more habits - they bought their clothes at Kaufmann's and Macy's - wore bright colors, etc. even fancy shoes - and get this - they wore patent leather shoes!

And all those years they said that we should never wear them because the boys could look up our skirts and dresses and se our unerwear!

And their rooms? OMG - no more "cells" - fancy furniture, curtains, each with her own private and elaborate bath - and a kitchenette for every 4 rooms with a private dining area for the nuns in that area if they didn't want to eat what the caterers were bringing for the breakfast, lunch or dinner.

Yeah - catered meals all day.

Why don't they cook????
