Thank God there's a thread here for MT, I'm studying MT right now and on my 3rd month. Our exercises are actual dictations from doctors and it's true that it's frustrating sometimes especially, if they're dictating while driving or in the elevator, eating, phones ringing and when they're talking fast

Is the pay really on words per minute? Which is better lines per day or wpm?
Actually, it gets frustrating more than annoying for me. Especially if the dictation is pretty fast and hard to follow and hear.

Most company require a certain line requirement a day that you have to reach. 500 lines per day is typical for part-time. All companies pretty much pay per line.. a line is based on 65 characters. Some might offer a lower pay rate, but on gross line basis, and some base a line on 75 characters. The standard that I've seen for most companies is pay per 65 character line. Some companies don't even pay for spaces which I think is just ridiculous because you do have to hit a space bar, right? Then there are some that pay per 10-11 word line. There are a few too that pay per character. So many variables!

Wow sounds complicated! I would hate having to worry about how much I am typing. Do you get the hang of this after a while?

Yeah, you will get the hang of it pretty quickly. It all seems so overwhelming at first, but it does get better once you get your feet wet.

I have a question... What about the PCDI school that you see on TV commercials? I requested the MT info packet before I saw this thread, like the day before is all... & I was wondering if that would be a good course to complete because it can be done online and it's cheaper than Career Step. Clara, who are you doing your training with?

Im training at MTC Academy, it's an MT school here in Manila, we have actual doctors who lecture us on different branches of Medicine like Derma, Pulmo, Onco, Gastro and other stuff so as to understand them more and to acquaint ourselves to different terminologies.
We also have laboratories wherein we transcribe actual dictations from doctors as exercises. Then every Friday we have 4 sets of exam, proofreading, editing and the actual transcription exam, the 4th is the exam from the lecture.
The training goes on for about 6 months for non medical graduates, and 3 months for med grads.

In all honesty, PCDI isn't considered a good school for this. The companies don't believe that you get enough training/good enough training through them.
Keep this in mind too... This is a verrrryy high demand market, especially for entry-level employees....very hard to get on with little to no experience when the requirements are 2-5 years experience that they bypass for certain schools. They would take people with the training from the schools that they know for a fact put out excellent grads and don't often consider anyone else. My sister took classes through a community college and she hasn't been able to get a response through sending her applications. Less expensive isn't always better unfortunately.
I can direct you to MTchat.com If you search through there, you will find people who took the course and basically said they just wasted money on it and it wasn't worth it.
I don't get anything out of recommending Career Step, Andrews, or M-Tec-- I'm just going by my research and what a lot of other people said-- including employers. I just like helping people out/make the right decisions so you don't waste your time/money.
If you call these transcription places or e-mail them you can also ask them which schools they recommend. A lot of them have the school they recommend for training on their website in their "careers" section.
