Meryl Streep as Julia Child

Just saw a couple clips tonight on one of those TV Hollywood-gossip shows of Meryl Streep playing Julia Child in the movie that’s due to come out in August. Man- I was SHOCKED. I mean I always knew Streep was fantastic, BUT, she looked/sounded exactly like Ms. Julia- it was almost spooky! I can hardly wait for ‘Julie & Julia’ to come out!

Dan Akroyd from Saturday Night Live played the best Julia. There was one skit where cutting up a chicken was involved. A cut to the hand with blood flying out in streams, the show had to go on. It was the best ever. I have to see if it's on utube and post it here.

I'm not particularly fan of Meryl Streep. I think in most of her roles she's just played Meryl Streep. So when I first heard about this film I thought, "oh, yeah. More Hollywood hoopla."

Then I saw a promo. Omigod! Close your eyes and it's Miss Julia you're hearing. And the make-up ain't too bad either.

Janie: Julia Child wasn't about French food. She was about not being intimidated by cooking. She was about the simple fact that food should be fun. She was about bringing some love into the kitchen.

A summary of her life as a cook can be made by one of her great lines: You can always eat your mistakes!

I just finished reading this book last night and really look forward to seeing the movie. Why does it always seem Meryl Streep always does these characters with the accents? It bugs me most of the time, but actually Julia was kind of a character so I think Streep's probably going to be a great choice. No disrespect to Julia of course, she's great.

You're right, chefneo...

Meryl often seems cast for parts w/ accents and "strange" vocals... and Julia indeed had an unusual voice! Like many cooks- Julia is my number-one HERO/IDOL/DIVA! I miss her terribly, too...

Just a reminder to all interested parties- this movie finally hits theaters Aug. 7!

On page #26 of the Aug. "Country Living" magazine is a tiny l'il piece on the magic of obtaining artifacts for recreating julia's famous kitchen for the movie- interesting!

There's a great pic- and it's short enuf to read it right in the grocery-store check-out line and quick put-back without having to even buy the mag! :)

Ya know Kev they say great minds think alike, I do the same thing as you and leaf thru the mag.'s as I wait in the cashiers line, being the speed reader that I am (NO KIDDING) I usually get alot of reading in, and especially at Wal-Mart where they simply refuse to hire enough help...not that I shop there that often, but EVERY TIME I DO IT IS ALWAYS THE SAME>>>>>POOR MANAGEMENT!!!!! But hey think of all the mag.'s I have read for free> hee-hee:D LIFE IS GRAND when you find the good, even amidst the inane!

I agree, Cath! I'll take it even a step further- I think Walmart should have all their product taste-sampling tables at the check-out lines. Either we'd all eat a TON while waiting and they'd lose mega-bucks, or they'd employ more staffers and WHIP us thru those danged long-azzed lines faster than cat-poop slides across a slick linoleum floor! :)

Great idea Kevin!!! I really would love to form a conspiracy with a bunch of fine people to all apply at Wal-Mart in Mgt. level posistions, get hired, play aloong with the mgt. training BS and then once they cut us all loose....BAM do it the right way:D Hire and schedule enough cashiers, train employees in Customer Service skills, and just turn the whole store around. I personally hate the way Wal-Mart is run!

20-25 years ago when our area got it's first Walmart it was COMPLETELY different. The stores were clean and cozy. Items were higher quality- better class. I loved their "WE BUY AMERICAN" policy- with red, white & blue posters, banners and placards everywhere.

Now? CHEAP, DIRTY, CHINTZY and all "foreign-made goods" that have played a role in the loss of decent American jobs. Walmart is NUMBER ONE in the world. Ya can't tell me they don't have the power to make USA number one again in many industries. But they don't. Pitiful!

Someone should drive down to Arkansas and teach'em a thing or 2. Old Sam Walton would roll over in his grave if he knew his stores turned into a place to buy Chinese and Taiwanese goods!

Kevin I believe you are 100% correct on that one.

I also remember when they had those banners too, I always felt good shopping there in the good old days! I often wondered what happened to that philosophy of Buy American! And you know they snuck it in on us unawares! Just one day I realized those Buy American banners were no longer there! How sick, and sad!

Remember all- 'Julie & Julia' hits theaters today!

I'm going Sunday Night and taking Mom... I can hardly wait- I'm counting down the hours! Here's a link to click-on to see two trailers that show Meryl Streep as Julia Child...

I can see your point about 'buy American'.

But me for one am really happy that we have broadened our horizons in the food market.

If it was left up to British food manfactures we'd still be eating meat and two veg every day in this country with fish fingers being labled exotic.:D I'm laughing but it is true.

In this country I can remember frozen hamburgers being a NEW product, and I'm not that old.

I remember the first supermarket opening in our area, when I think back, it was really small but we thought it was fantastic.

Part of Walmart is our ASDA stores and I find it much better than any other chain we have. They have a great customer ethics. It knocks spots of Tesco, who I find arrogant, and snobby, unhelpful and even frozen brussel sprouts and maple syrup are deemed as seasonal goods.

I have had words with the manager on many occasions but nothing comes of it.

I went to see it at 12:01 this morning. My first premier.

It is wonderful, opens with the offloading of the huge, blue, Buick station wagon mentioned in the book, in Paris.

I did not read Julie's book, think I might now. Read so much bad about it, but I want to know her better. Have read Julia's several times.

Only complaint, it's not long enough!!!

Enjoy,
Nan

I read the autobiography co-written w/ her nephew Paul- "My Life in France" but I haven't read "Julie & Julia" yet.

I'm seeing the movie Sunday Night w/ a co-worker.

My sister and a friend of her's stopped by and rang my bell and woke me up at noon today (remember- I work nights/sleep days!) and asked if I wanted to tag along w/ them for the 1:00PM showing. But I was half-asleep and didn't feel like rushing about the shower and dress in time...

Glad you liked it, Nan! I can hardly wait! :)
