Meryl Streep as Julia Child

I am chomping at the bit to see the movie. Ain't going until Sunday night- am going w/ a co-worker and taking my Mom as she was the one I sat with all those many years ago when I was a kid in our living room watching Julia's PBS episodes. Many of my friends made awhole night of seeing the movie- went out afterward and had fancy meals... You all know my Mom's difficult story- we don't go to fancy places to eat due to her issues, but we're having supper afterward at a small town joint where the staff knows us- the place is known for it's split bbq/fried chickens, platters of fried smelt and fried catfish- and that will be fancy and satisfying enuf for us!

Well, I finally saw it, and Man- I was NOT disappointed!

Maybe I was just in one of those weepy moods that guys seem to barely admit having- but am I the only one who teared-up frequently at all the nostalgia? Dang- I just MISS Julia SO much.

I loved the way the film showed the love-story she and Paul lived. And the vintage Paris was SO fun to see.

I came home and was inspired to pull not only all my Julia volumes from the bookshelf in the kitchen, but also all my France travel volumes from the shelf in the living room!

BTW- I posted about this here long ago, but my first Julia cookbook was her "The Way to Cook" in '89. Seeing the list of her past books on the inside cover- I became obsessed and had to own as many as I could! This was back before the internet- I searched at every bookstore I could, and found that most were out of print. However weeks later I happened onto a large box at an antique's market labled "Cookbooks". Right on top was Julia's "Mastering the Art...". The WHOLE BOX was dirt cheap so in a hurry, I picked-up the entrie thing, figuring even if the remaining cookbooks under Julia's weren't that great, I wouldn't be out much $. I stuck it in the trunk and didn't make time to search thru the box for a couple weeks, but imagine my JOY when I discovered several other Julia-treasures towards the bottom of the box! (Along w/ a couple of hard-to-find James Beard titles, too!)

Lastly- I kept reading about all the dinner dates and fancy-schmancy suppers folks were planning for this movie-outing. Guess what Mom & I dined on after it was over?

Julia's Dover Sole Meuniére? Nope!

Her Beef Bourguignon? Nope!

We had something else that Julia often admitted to LOVING: McDonald's Hamburgers!

That's one thing I loved about Julia, she wasn't a food snob. The thread that ran through her books and shows was the same, cooking and eating are supposed to be fun and she made it so.

When Meryl Streep was making Julie & Julia, she was also making "It's Complicated" a romantic comedy w/ Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin. I saw it last weekend, and it's SO GOOD! And believe it or not- loaded w/ as many wonderful kitchen scenes as J&J!

Okay- my used copy of Meryl Streep's "Mama Mia!" arrived... and I realize I'm proll'y the last person in the world to have seen this movie- but I have three trains of thought on the matter:

1.) It was an absolutely adorable film.

2.) Pierce Brosnan should NEVER be allowed to sing again- ever!

3.) I love ABBA music- but if I don't hear an ABBA tune again for a year- that'll be absolutely fine with me- HA! :):):)
