NASA to Bomb the Moon

CanMan

Yup, you heard right. About 2 months ago NASA launched a rocket toward the Moon which was to orbit until they figured out where and when it would strike. It was hoped that it would create a tremendous dust cloud that a sister satellite would pass through and analyze what it finds.

The location has now been determined and will occur on Oct. 9th at about 4:30 am Pacific Time. You can read more about it at the following link:
NASA Names Target on the Moon

Its supposed to be visible for anyone between Hawaii and California who has a 10" telescope. I hope it doesn't give the Man In The Moon a black eye. :)

Geez all they need to worry about is damned moon dust!!!
Awe-inspiring earth shattering particles freakin moon dust contains is probably going to explain all the unknown mysteries of the universe!!! So important that they have to spoil even the tranquility of the moon, isn't bad enough that they've bombed the hell outta the earth!

I love astronomy and looking at the planets with telescopes, but gezz bomb the moon to study the dust??? Give me a break!!!

Some people say there is an extra-terrestrial base on the backside of the moon. I wonder if the E.T.'s would get upset having a missile land in their backyard.

Our tax dollars hard at work.

Yes OUR Hard earned Tax Dollars!!!..... and just look at us Americans; we will scare the hell outta any poor old ET's, bomb them, heck maybe even kill a few in the process and all in the name of science... I sure hope there are not any up there to get in the way:)

That experiment is all well and good but there are bigger concerns. The shuttle is due to be retired and the project to replace it has stalled and may be cancelled. Folks, we'll no longer be able to get into space on our own power, we'll have to buy rides from Russia and soon China. The US manned space program is pretty much over and our technology is falling back while we import all the components for our remaining space projects. The US is becoming a second rate nation thanks to our short sighted and self serving leadership.

Very Interesting comment, and as I think about it, I do believe we were supposed to be a nation that was to have been...of the people, by the people, and for the people!!!
NOT THE POLITICIANS>

But the majority of the people seem to have chosen the cheap and easy way and allowed someone else to do the thinking for them. We now will pay the price.

Americans seem to be retreating into their own little worlds centered on themselves and losing the spirit of adventure and curiosity. It looks to me like Romans just before Romes collapse. Call me a pessimist but I see no signs of that turning around but rather I see growing religious fundamentalism and an increased acceptance of pseudoscience. This is no longer the dynamic nation of my youth. I'm afraid our days of greatness are over.

Let's face it - America is doomed one way or the other.

Although there are millions of us that don't agree with what is going on - no one (of so-called "authority") is going to listen to us about taxes, health care, spending, etc.

And shame on us being so greedy (LOL) and thinking only of ourselves and our children for generations to come in regard to the spending, etc. How heartless we have become!

No one is thinking about the poor Man in the Moon! Dr. Procto is shooting a missle up the Man in the Moon's butt and all this cheese is going to be released! Now we won't have cheese on the moon anymore - we are stuck with Kraft over-processed singles.

NOW WE ARE DOOMED!

LOL.....................

(if only ol' Bessie didn't jump over the moon we wouldn't have this problem)

I may be wromg but I thought that plenty of dust samples were already retrieved from the moon alond with a lot of rocks. It's not as if no one has been there before. I wonder what idiot decide one day. "Hey, lets shoot a missle at the moon". They will probably end up doing something stupid like splitting it in half. Then in 2012 it can fall on us.

LCROSS will be crashed into crater Cabeus A for the specific purpose of looking for traces of water ice in a permanantly shaded part of the crater. This isn't a frivolous exercise by any means. The long range goal is to find out if the resources exist on the moon to help support a permanant installation on the moon. The resulting dust cloud from the impact will be viewed and recorded in many bands and analyzed to discover the composition.

Oh OK I see now! BOMBS AWAY:eek:

I love the space programme. I have been enthralled by it since I saw the take off of Apollo 11 from our school television. I remember that we were scheduled to watch the Hills of Kilimanjaro, a geography series that was on the syllabus, that year.

The headmaster came in to the hall and said that he thought that the children (my form), should watch the Apollo lift off. There was an obvious exchange of words between the form teacher and the headmaster as to which would be more beneficial to the class. He said this is something that these children will be able to tell their grand children, it is an historical event. So we got to watch the take off. It was magnificent. I felt privileged.

It is a pity that it seems that the shuttle is coming to the end of its functional life, and it is a shame that the space programme is taking a back seat.

I feel that the reason for this 'explosion on the moon' is going to be the very first step in manned travel to Mars, or at least the very first step in making living on the moon for an indefinite period possible. The way I see it this going to be much easier way to take off from the Moon than it is from Earth, (gravity and all that). The space travellers will need much less fuel.

It's a pity that Russian and China have to be involved. :(

I disagree, I think every nation should be involved. Space exploration should be a human endeavor, not just a national one. Politics has been responsible for too many human catastrophies and should be left behind on earth.

They explored and explored and explored the moon and pretty soon they just dragged it all away, now there is no more moon!!!

This may happen soon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
