NASA to Bomb the Moon

It's a shame we don't (publicly) have the ability to go to the Asteroid Belt (5th position from the sun) and get samples to confirm that it is the other half of our nice planet. Records from our ancient records indicate the 5th position was where our planet used to be (called then "Tiamat") and it was struck and sliced in half, spinning off a solid mass in to a new orbit in the 3rd position from the Sun.

And of course we "acquired" our Moon at a later time in history. Some say its original parent is due for a return soon and to visit its former child/moon.

I admire astronomy as a serious, legitimate science- love it, find it intensely interesting. But like other things- why has there always been a whacky "Art Bell"/alien abduction component to it?

I may have shared this story once already- but a few years back I had to fire a night-baker at a silver-mine camp on Admiralty Island. He listened to the Art Bell program on late-night radio each shift and one day several miners came to me to report that this baker (Mike) was seen several nights bundled-up in a parka, walking a dangerous high pier in the darkness (over water) while paying little attention to his footing (looking up in the sky). Supposedly a guest on Bell's show was "alerting" listeners to some strange phenomenon taking place in the sky that would change their lives. Mike ignored repeated pleas for safety, and directives to stop abandoning his job duties, and insisted on having his life changed by this wacko space crap, so he was invited to leave camp- and stay gone. So, I guess in a way, his life was changed. Sad, but true... :)

Cathy is a poet and doesn't know it!

LOL

Hey I looked up last night - and you're right Cathy - there was just a sliver of it left!

That is so interesting I can't wait!

Goodness knows though if it does show up all the powers that be will want to bomb it so they can study it to death!

Each are entitled to their own views but one country practically ruled by the mafia and the other with an unreasonable rod of iron. I think it is a bad mixture.

Griz, some people just can't comprehend basic physics and prefer to take the easy road, thus you get religious fundamentalists and UFO whackos. In his book Bad Astronomy Phil Plait mentions an incident while he was at the Cape for a launch where he saw lights in the sky moving in a strange manner and with an odd noise. They turned out to be a flock of ducks illuminated by the spotlights and flying towards him. He says under it all he was a bit disappointed it wasn't a UFO. Underneath most of us have a wish to see the unusual and really want proof we're not alone in the universe.

All my life as a child I never believed we were alone in our Universe. I have always believed in One God and His Angels. I have always believed there were angels that fell from grace and that begat Satan and his legions! Now I still believe that and always will. I do believe the search for alien life forms remain and I even have no problems with researching that as well, for in the scheme of all things pertaining to life if it does not hurt then we can go ahead and study and research and ask questions all we want. That is how we are made and created, we are thinking creatures!

What I have a problem with is this whole Bombing aspect, why is it necessary? My own conclusion is that they are really wanting to study a new bomb and the first place that they would like to start with is on some object in outer space. Why can't they take dust from the moon that was retrieved when our space craft landed there years back? What has really changed since then? Not that much I am afraid. Well the moon got a little older and so did I! But my instinct tells me that this bombing stuff runs a whole heck of alot deeper than what any of us are being told! When they tested the first neuculear bombs look at a mess that created here on earth! At least they are smart enough not to try that one again. And since NASA is well aware that there are many agencies, astronomers and the like watching what is going on out there they simply must "announce" that they are going to bomb the moon. I do not for one moment believe their "explanation" of why!

Just my own educated guess and in-put.

P.S. Since this is a food forum, I sure wish they were researching more for the purposes of agriculture and feeding all of creation rather than destruction!!!

Yes, this is a food forum and the world organizations, especially the United States, has been heavily involved in finding ways for farmers to improve their output, quality, and protection from pests, etc., so the bulging population of the world, especially in developing countries, can feed themselves.........and then the people complain about people messing around with their 'natural' food.

Apparently that won't be much of an issue much longer since it appears that Mother Nature has decided to make farming and gardening in most of the world a total disaster. Even in California we have farmers not able to grow crops because they have no water.

No, LCROSS is not a bomb per se. It is a mapping and survey device which has completed its mission. They even got pics of Apollo landing sights which show the equipment left behind and even the trails left by the astronauts walking in the dust. Bombing here is used in the vernacular sense rather than literal. It will hit much like a small meteor and send up a plume which can be analyzed. The purpose is to find out if there is water ice under the dust layers and surface regolith.

Thank you for explaining that, it makes much better sence to me now.

You are right many people do like to complain about genetic engineering of food and on and on the complaints go! But when you look at the BIG PICTURE and LONG TERM GOAL of trying to provide food for the masses it makes me rather thankful, and glad that the scientists are at least trying to help mankind. Thank God for their efforts and of-course the many wonderful advances that have been made!

The only part of genetic engineering of crops I object to is the seed from the crop is sterile and can't be saved to start a new crop forcing farmers to buy all the seed for the next years crop from the ag corporations. This little feature was deliberately engineered in to increase corporate profits and completely control production. ADM and Monsanto got some heat for it a few years ago but nothing was done about it.

And as we find in our seedless watermelons, seedless oranges, etc., and in all our annual seeds that we buy from the local stores because we can't regrow anything from them.

AND That is why I love heirloom seeds exclusively!!!!:)

GO Heirloom whenever you can!!!!! Like the old song says "if it was good enough for my grandpa it's good enough for me"!

I am a very opinionated person- not always right, mind you. But very opinionated. And I never begrudge anyone else their own opinion, either. That said- I feel there's a proper time and place, and should be an expected high standard of manners in sharing one's personal viewpoints- and in turn- in listening to others' viewpoints, as well... It's just that some opinions have more of an "entertainment value" rather than any educational merit. I love hearing whacko theories. I love Roswell stories... I love abduction tales... I also have a personal faith, though don't take a lot of religious teachings literally (Crossing the Red Sea? Building an Arc big enuf to hold two of every species in creation? Billions of people descended from one man and another being created from just a rib?) And who knows- they may even one day be proven to be true. But I refuse not to incorporate the LOGIC the good Lord gave me, into the process. Again- I love to laugh, so I find some level of value in it all- but I ain't ever been one to drink kool-aid! :)

Well they blasted away at the moon and they made a mess and it wasn't too easy to see from the earth's observatories and folks were disappointed and we now get to wait on pins and needles to see if there was ever water up there or not! This is all too exciting:rolleyes:

RE: "Americans seem to be retreating into their own little worlds centered on themselves and losing the spirit of adventure and curiosity."

When I worked at lodges in Alaska owned by Princess Cruises in the early 90's we hired many students from around the world. I was 24 and the "foreigners" were all 20 to 25 or so, too. The Europeans and those from Asia as well as other places were total news hounds. They sat in front of CNN many free moments during the day and read news mags and newspapers- just like our culture used to all sit in fron of Walter Cronkite and John Chancelor decades ago for a half-hour just after supper, religiously. These kids were very curious, very aware and very in-tune w/ world events. Very "connected" and involved.

The foreigners were polite and gracious about it- they never wished to offend us, but often they questioned we young Americans' lack of interest in the news of the world. Many close friends confided in me that those from different nations viewed American youth as being so self-centered that they didn't have an interest, nor feel any need to be aware of news events. They thought we all kinda felt like we were the very center of the universe, and if there's ever anything important going on- we're likely involved and already know about it anyway, so why take the time to watch and read?

Today all us student-aged kids are in our 40's. Hmmm...

All of this upsets me to no end. We have plenty of higher priorities right here on earth. I can live the rest of my life quite happily without ever knowing anything else about the moon and anything else beyond. It's a complete waste of money. But then again is it any worse than the corporate bailout that our children and grand children are stuck paying for ? I am fed up with Washington. Republicans , Democrats, it doesn't matter. We are being screwed by the very people we elected. And given the fact that the only ones that have the money to run for any public office are narcissistic, and low life scum to begin with, well that's who ends up running our country. Our life's are so controlled by the government it's scary. Our founding fathers would be appalled at what our nation has become. Politicians have no sense of sacrifice. At one time believe it or not, congressman and senators did not get paid, they had no residence in Washington. They lived in their home states and traveled on their money to meet in Washington. .....................I'd better stop now before I really start going

I feel ya, Rick... I feel ya, fer shure. Actually, I am very political but I have learned elsewhere that I myself am better off saying nothing, 'cause I get to feeling passionate, and sooner or later I say something that offends. I am just conservative enuf to where I pizz-off my liberal loved ones- and just liberal enuf to where conservatives don't want me, either! It's HELL to have TWO SIDES rolling their eyes at me! :) And offending isn't what my intention is- still- it seems to be what happens. So, I personally have to abstain from political talk. Not telling anyone else what to do or how to feel- but that's how I have to handle myself. So, I keep it all bottled-up and only explode around those near and dear to me! Ha! :)
