- 3/4 cup chopped nuts
- 1 cup chopped dates
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 1/2 tsps baking soda
- 1/4 cup shortening
- 3/4 cup boiling water
- 2 eggs, beaten slightly
- 1/2 tsp pure vanilla extract
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 1/2 cups flour
- Preheat oven to 325 degrees.
- Combine nuts, dates, salt, and soda in bowl.
- Add shortening and boiling water.
- Let stand for 15 minutes; stir to blend.
- Add vanilla, sugar and flour to eggs; blend.
- Add to date mixture; stir to blend.
- Bake 1 to 1 1/4 hours.
