Hot Cross Bun Ingredients

To make Hot Cross Buns

  1. Soften yeast in warm water.
  2. Scald milk; Combine scalded milk, canola oil, sugar, and salt; cool to lukewarm.
  3. Sift together 1 cup flour and cinnamon; stir into milk mixture.
  4. Add eggs and beat well. Stir in softened yeast and currants.
  5. Add remaining flour to make a soft dough, beating well.
  6. Cover with damp cloth and let rise until double (about 1 1/2 hours).
  7. Punch down dough and turn out on lightly-floured board.
  8. Cover and let rest 10 minutes.
  9. Shape into 24 balls.
  10. Place balls on greased baking sheets; cover with clean cloth and let rise until double.
  11. Brush tops with egg white.
  12. Bake Cross Buns at 375° F. for 15 minutes.
  13. If desired, decorate with traditional cross with a sugar glaze.

Makes 2 dozen Hot Cross Buns.
