Hey Gang,
Well, that was QUICK! My birthday package from my sister arrived early and am I ever excited!
You may recall that she ordered me the two Val Archer books that Cathy recommended "A Basket-Full of Berries" and "A Basket-Full of Apples". These books are petite, cute and appear absolutely loaded with beautiful l'il watercolors that true to Cathy's word, are quite frame-able! The recipes look great, too!
Also, Brook-recommended "Where Flavor Was Born: Recipes and Culinary Travels Along the Indian Ocean Spice Route" by Andreas Viestad. I have one maddening beef with this book after first glance, Brook- (although had I even known this ahead of time it would have in no way affected my desire to have it!) and that is the terrible TINY font-size! Here's this massive book with huge pages and the font chosen by whomever designed the book's lay-out is in my mind a terrible mis-use of space! Especially since at first glance the majority of pages seem to be only half-used in the first damned place! I wear reading glasses- but rarely have to use them. Looks like I'll have to hunt the suckers down for the first time in 6 months for this book... I ain't had to wear my specs since I last received correspondence from a credit card company, Hee-Hee! Anyway- however- ALSO at first glance, the miniscule type looks like it will be very easily forgiven due to the multitude of lavish photographs in the book! Brook knows from some bickering-filled posts at another food forum many months back that I LOVE and REQUIRE illustrations and/or photos in cookbooks, and this one is LOADED with TONS them! Good job, Brook!
I can hardly wait to dig into all of these- the worst part is, currently I'm only half-way thru w/ Edna Lewis' "A Taste of Country Cooking", and after that I have the Deene Brother's "Ya'll Come Eat" & then Lidia's book, and then I have pulled "Smokehouse Ham, Spoon-Bread, & Scuppernong Wine", and placed it on my bedside table to re-read too. AND since I tend to read less in the summer-time, at this rate I won't even start these new ones until well into Fall... Oh well- something to look forward to!
