Rising Food Costs - Gardening

I have noticed alot of people around here advertising for pairs of rabbits.
Seems raising meat rabbits is also a way to help with the rising food cost.
I dont think I will be letting anyone babysit my pet bunny lol.

The moral of that story is never have a pair of rabbits or soon you will be advertising to sell lots more pairs of rabbits, especially after Easter.

Just keep your bunnies away from my garden and they will be just fine:)

I just replanted 2 new rows of spinach today, and if I see a bunny out there feasting on it I will not be responsible for my actions.

Yeah they take 28-31 days to have babies and can reproduce as young as 12 weeks. I love the one I have but I dont think I would ever want another one in the house. They are alot of work. Put in one cup of food and get three cups of waste in return

lol You sould like Mr McGregor.
There was a bunny eating from our garden last year and I told my hubby's Dad to shoot it.
We have more problems with groundhogs than anything.

By The Way Jg, I Want To Remind You To Save All The Lovely Bunny Waste As It Makes Terrific Fertilizer For The Garden....so Do Not By All Means Let It Go To Waste:d I Would Love Some For My Garden, I Am In The Midst Of Ageing Some Chicken Manure At The Moment, It Will Burn The Plants If Not Aged, It Is My Understanding That Bunny Pellets Are Less Likely To Burn The Plants.

But Anyway Your Pa-in-law Would Probably Love Some Free Fertilizer! If Not Ya' Can Always Mail Me A Box :d I'm Sure The Usps Would Love Us!

Bunny poo is, indeed, one of the few manures that can do directly into the garden without burning plants. Among the others, btw, are llama (hmmmm. Do yas think we could have it shipped up from South America?).

Chicken is the worst, and has to be aged or it will burn plants badly.

>We have more problems with groundhogs than anything. <

Shouldn't be a real problem, Janie, as there are lots of varminters who'd be glad to get rid of them for you.

And, lawd, you want to talk about good on the table! Don't sneer. Groundhogs eat the same things as cows, and their meat tastes just like range-fed cattle. And their hide makes some of the toughest leather available. Early explorers and settlers preferred making "whangs" (think string) our of it, because it was so strong.

lol I mail the package and tape a dozen car air freshners to the outside of the box.
His cage has a pullout tray underneath where I keep clumping kitty litter. Helps keep down any smell. When he is out he uses a litterbox like a cat. Inside the cage he has a large litterbox that I make into a bed for him by padding it with cotton towels and old tshirts. He is so fat if he didnt have the bed he could get sore feet and that would not be good.

Groundhogs are sneaky. That thing would leave the garden every time Jon's Dad tried to slip the door open or crack a window to get a shot at him. They take out an entire bunch of green beans at a time. He finally got him but it took like two weeks. He had to just sit out there and wait for him.
Jon's aunt set a trap to get something that was eating her garden. She got a skunk in the trap  She had to get her son to shoot it to get it out of the trap.
I have heard more than one say groundhogs are good eats. My father in law told me about one old guy he used to work with who tried to cook one in the microwave at work once. He said that didnt work out well for him or the microwave..lol

Hi KYH,

Maybe you will know, how does rabbit taste? I do not mean wild rabbit but rabbits raised for food purposes? I am debating wether or not to get a few, and since they do multiply rather quickly. I am just thinking about the fertilizer, and the meat, and the fur, well there could be alot of good reasons to raise them.

Would really appreciate your input on this!

Cathy

Mini Rex rabbits are normally raised for meat rabbits.
Jon says they are very good. I have never tried them.

I Have Heard They Are Good Eating, I Am Not Sure I Could Even Do It, But It's At The Thought Stage Right Now. Probably Will Just Stay At That!

But If Times Do Get Any Harder Financially, Well You Just Never Know!

Gas Is Up To $3.76 A Gallon Here; And With Milk And Eggs, And Just About Everything Going Higher And Higher Well Who Knows. I Am A Survivor, And If I Have To Raise My Own Food Well Damn It I Will! I Will Even Get A Goat For Milk & Cheese And We Will Not Go Without!!! I'll Walk To Work, So What If I Get A Little Sweaty, And Save The Car For Grocery Trips And Such. We May All Have To Adjust Our Lifestyles Before We Know It, But What Won't Kill Us Will Only Make Us Stronger!

And It May Just Be Fun To Return To Some Of Our Good Ole' Days Way Of Living!!!

Luckily we live right down the road from town. Less than a quater of a mile so its not bad on me to get to the store. Jon's Dad said he would get a cow to raise for food but the grankids would just make it a pet and he would never be allowed to put it in the freezer lol.

I hear more and more about people quitting jobs because it takes everything they make for gas. Unless you are among the very wealthy I really dont know what people are going to do.
I see big price leaps every few weeks in stuff we normally buy like cooking oil, flour & cheese for example.

I would welcome the walking, as it really is great exercise. I am serious about it, when my 8 yr old goes on summer break, I will walk. There will be alot of bonus's to it.

About 25 yrs. ago when my kids were infant, 4 and 5 yrs. of age we purchased a cow and raised her for meat. She got out of the pasture one weekend and found herself a terric bull who lived down the road and she was found to be with calf shortly thereafter. Well we wound up raising the calf for the deep freeze and it was the best beef ever. The kids found it all to be exciting and never even had a problem with it. Our original cow eventually was sold at the cattle auction. But I did learn how to milk a cow (by choice) help in the birthing of a calf (by necessity), and also learned that children don't get too attached to cows! Maybe the kids in your family wouldn't get too attached, a cow is not a cuddly kitten or puppy after all and the bigger they get the less you want to pat their head! I did like our old cow, but it was not a real affectionate pet to love.

With the price of corn and feed now I do not know if having a cow would pay off, which is a darn shame. I loved having fresh beef in the deep freeze! But if you can get your hands on some venison it is also very good eating. I cook mine in such a way you can mistake it for beef if you did not know any better! Where we live deer and turkey are plentiful! I am certain as food prices begin to soar many will begin hunting again! And who can blame them!

Just food for thought JG, I did not mean to ramble on.

"Maybe you will know, how does rabbit taste?"

Thank you, Lord, for finally having somebody feed me that line:

Why, it tastes just like chicken! :D

Actually, it is rather chicken-like. Or more like a cross between chicken and veal.

I like it, myself.

We've been talking about raising them ourselves. Either that or guinea fowl. Either way, unfortunatly, we're likely to have a problem with the bird dog. So it's been wait and see, so far. But the way costs of everything are going......

Gas is around $4.00 here. That mountain bike I bought a few years ago really makes quick trips to the store a lot cheaper, especially since the rack in the back can hold quite a bit.

As the title of this thread suggests, rising food costs are making gardening more and more appealing too.

Rabbit tastes like chicken, huh! I wonder is it a pleasant flavor? I just wonder if I could get used to it. I am sure if it were prepared well then it'd be tasty! If not there is always Brunswick stew;)

Jafo good thing you have a bike! I tell you folks around here would kill someone on a bike, they all seem to have this obsession with talking on the cell phone while driving, and they drive like freaks who could care less. I watched one young woman handling a baby in a car carrier seat one day come out of Blockbuster, never quit talking the entire time, buckled baby in, got in car threw it in reverse and smacked into another lady also backing out right behind her, both were yaking away on their cellie's! I would rather walk, but boy I wish I could bike! You're lucky:)

I tell you the food prices are absolutley climbing every week! I keep stretching the garden bigger and bigger each week, and buying more and more seed, seems I want to be prepared for a fall crop now! Funny what climbing food costs will have us do!

The blindman keeps telling me we are getting a wagon so that I can walk and pull him behind. That is so not happening lol. With food prices raising so much we are eating more sandwiches. I cannot wait til the garden comes on. I love veggies. My husband wont touch them. He only eats fried green tomatoes and potatoes.

OK HERE'S THE PLAN.....DON'T LET HIM KNOW THIS CAME FROM ME OR HE WILL WANT US TO QUIT TALKING! LOL

BUT HERE'S THE WAY TO GET A STUBBORN "OLD MAN" TO EAT HIS VEGGIES:)....

WHEN THE SUMMER SQUASH AND THE ZUCCINI SQUASH GET RIPE, SLICE THEM REALLY THIN AND DIP IN A BATTER AND DEEP FRY, BEGIN DOING THIS WITH ALL HIS VEGGIES...OKRA, SQUASH, EGGPLANT, SWEET POTATOES (LEAVE OFF THE BATTER FOR THIS ONE) AND ON DOWN THE LINE WITH AS MANY VEGGIES AS YOU CAN GET AWAY WITH AND THEN SEE HOW HE LIKES THEM FRIED. WHY HECK MAKE A BIG PRODUCTION OUT OF IT=LIKE GO BUY A "FRY DADDY" AND GET ALL EXCITED OVER ALL THE NEW STUFF YOU CAN FRY IN IT! THEN AS TIME GOES ON GRADUALLY BEGIN TO MAKE THE SLICES THICKER (JUST IN MINUTE CENTIMETERS) AS TIME GOES ON HE WILL NOT EVEN NOTICE. AT THIS POINT YOU CAN MENTION SAY FOR INSTANCE EGGPLANT PARMESEAN FOR DINNER ONE NIGHT, EXPLAIN TO HIM THAT IT'S FRIED EGGPLANT TOPPED WITH MARINARA SAUCE AND FRESH GRATED PARMESAN CHEESE & THEN BROILED HE MIGHT GIVE IT A TRY AND I CAN PRETTY MUCH GUARANTEE HE WILL LOVE IT!!! NEXT THING YOU KNOW HE IS EATING VEGGIES & LOVING THEM. AND WHO KNOWS ONE DAY YOU MAY EVEN HAVE HIM ASKING YOU FOR A VEGETABLE LASAGNA, OR SOMETHING EXOTIC LIKE THAT!

NOW SINCE YOU PROBABLY HAVE A TALKING COMPUTER "THE CAT MAY ALLREADY BE OUT OF THE BAG", BUT IF NOT...WELL IT CAN BE OUR LITTLE SECRET. SOMETIMES HUBBY'S ARE FUSSIER THAN LITTLE CHILDREN ABOUT THEIR EATS. SORRY GUYS, BUT IT'S A FACT! AND WHAT'S A WIFE TO DO? WELL, JUST GOTTA' FIGURE OUT A WAY TO GET 'EM TO TRY NEW THINGS! ESPECIALLY WHEN IT COMES TO "EATING THEIR VEGGIES!"

GOOD LUCK JG; HOPE IT WORKS! CATHY

I will try that as soon as I get some things from the garden. Thank you.
His computer does talk but I have my own computer so its our secret.
