Happy Birthday Cookie!

Today I made ..

Garlic Ginger Chicken Strips

SERVES 4
1/4 cup sherry wine (or chicken broth)
1/4 cup soy sauce
4 garlic cloves, minced
1 tablespoon honey
1 tablespoon minced fresh basil (or 1 teaspoon dried basil)
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger (or 2 teaspoons minced fresh gingerroot)
1/2 teaspoon Chinese five spice powder
1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1 lb boneless skinless chicken breast, cut into 1 inch strips

Combine the first nine ingredients in a bowl.
Remove 3 tablespoons for basting; cover and refrigerate.
Place the chicken in a large resealable plastic bag; add the remaining marinade.
Seal the bag and turn it around to coat it thoroughly. Refrigerate for at least 3 hours.
Drain and discard the marinade. Broil the chicken strips 3"-4" from the heat for 3 minutes; then turn the strips over.
Baste with reserved marinade. Broil 4-5 minutes longer or until chicken juices run clear, turning occasionally.

Remove from oven and serve. Enjoy!

These were good but the five spice powder flavor was pretty strong. I just marinaded them and then pan fried them in an iron skillet. I made risotto to go with it.

Well dear ones, I'm just back after 10 days away...

I've missed you all- been entertaining my Alaskan friend Sallie- showed her around Illinois, seeing all the nearby Linclon sites and everything fun from St. Louis to Chicago. We had a HOOT!

She got to see the Gateway Arch, Busch Stadium, the Mississippi River and many riverboats, Lincoln's home/tomb, his New Salem Village, and his new Presidential Library/Museum.

Then in Chicago we stayed at the lovely Palmer House Hotel and on Day #1 did a Greyline Bus Tour, seeing Oprah's studio, Shedd Aquarium, the Field Museum, the Museum of Science & Industry, shopping at Water Tower Place, the Sears Tower and the Hancock Center, plus many sites damaged during the infamous Chicago Fire (falsely rumoured to be started by Mrs' O'Leary's cow). On Day #2 we then toured Frank Lloyd Wright homes- which was a fantastic tour!

We ate many fun mid-western things from PIZZA and Tenderloin Sandwiches, to GYROS and TAOCS and everything in between. We musta ate our way through the enitre state!

Anyway- it's wonderful to be back "home"!

Welcome back chubs glad you had fun.

Last night we went to a restaurant in Yellow Springs, Sunrise cafe. We have been there before and it was usually good but last night I was disappointed. I ordered the quinoa cake with vegetable ragu. I was intrigued by it on the menu because there was a recipe for this sort of thing that came out on Bon Appetit several years ago and it's been burning a hole in my brain. I would have already made it by now but DH looks worried when there is no meat on his plate. Anyway I was extremely dissapointed. The quinoa tasted like it was just boiled in water with no salt or anything. The vegetable ragu was a dry pile of carrots, celery and potatoes again very bland. I always want to go to the cook and say something when I get a dish so dissapointing but then I think it would probably not be appreciated. I'm sure no one will ever tell him how dissapointing this dish is. They will just order it leave unsatisfied and never come back again.

My new friend, Minot, is coming over tonight (he's bringing "Mama Mia" which somehow got by me without my ever having watched it!) and he mentioned craving red meat, so I'll pick us up a couple of well-marbled ribeyes from Echo Valley Meats, which I'll grill to a perfect medium-rare, then smother w/ a pan of sauteed mushrooms that I've tossed a pinch of sugar and drizzled a half-shot of bourbon into. Then I think I'll go the baked Sweet Potato route- and start w/ a wedge of iceberg w/ chunky blue cheese dressing, crumbled bacon, split grape tomatoes and a hand-full of hot-smoked salmon chunks. And if there's still room for dessert later in the night we'll drive to the nearby Culver's for Raspberry-Banana Sundaes!

That's a cute movie I hope you like it. Last night I made chicken cutlets with riesling and grapes, roasted haricots verts and baby potatoes.

Tonight we are going to some friends house for dinner. It's been a tough week at work so I have actually only cooked 3 nights this week. Rare for me.

Today I am making Beef Bourguignon with roasted garlic mashed potatoes. I am making garlic cheddar biscuits to go with it.

We went out to Country Buffet today, it was really Good. They had fresh fruit, melons, so Good reminded me of Summer! I can't wait until weather breaks it's cold again here in Chicago. Cookie :)

For tomorrow's Saturdays dinner I made turkey meat-loaf with fresh sliced mushrooms and diced onion with barbeque sauce. I made Spanish rice to go with it. I Loved the Spanish rice recipe I put up on the form it turned out really Good. It was a Betty Crocker recipe. Cookie :)

jfain, your yummy chicken almost sounds like a veronique.

janie- your Bourguignon, mashed spuds, and biscuits sounds yummy- especially w/ the blizzard we're expecting that's supposed to bring WINTER back our way here in Illinois.

And cookie... I love buffets! And I agree- the melon indeed sounds fresh and summery!

Tonight we are going out again! Wow it's so unlike me. We are going to Nazareth for dinner. It's belly dance night. I love belly dancing, so much fun!
