What date in November do you celebrate Thanks Giving?
 
Thursday November 26 is Thanksgiving.
You know that is the costume I liked the best also :)

For the past several years my sister in law has been having a Thanksgiving dinner at their house and my father in law goes down there to eat. A few days before I will make a smaller little Thanksgiving dinner for just him, my husband and I. It is very cozy just the three of us. Jon and I do not go to the dinner his brother has and their place on Thanksgiving. I make dinner here for the two of us on Thanksgiving. We usually have lamb or duck.
Sometimes my brother will bring me a turkey and ask me to make their Thanksgiving dinner so he can pick it up lol. Those years I am exhaused! His wife doesnt cook though. My inlaws are divorced so we work in a Thanksgiving dinner at his Moms and stepdads in there somewhere.
Last year I made Thanksgiving dinner for the whole family at his Dad's because my sister in law was very pregnant and not feeling well.

For Christmas we used to go to his Dads on the 25 of December. Then his brother wanted to be able to stay home on Christmas so we usually do a day or so before at his Dads. We have a big ham and turkey with tons of sides and desserts. I am cooking for atleast 3 days before. I work on candies I want to make one day. Pop the turkey in its brine the day before I want to bake it. I make the desserts & homemade bread the evening before and all of the side dishes that can be served cold or at room temperature. My husband and I take them all to his Dad's to store in the fridge the day before the dinner. If we are not doing dinner at his Dads on Christmas Eve then we do his Mom's dinner on that day which always puts me behind getting my things done. I am always up all night the before the dinner at his Dads cooking. THAT is the one time a year my small kitchen becomes a pain.
My father in law usually makes some things for the dinner. He will make green beans with potatoes and ham. He buys some of the bake and serve rolls and he has a couple of things he has created he likes to make like turkey meatballs in mushroom gravy.
 
Favorite new cookbook so far?

My favorite new cookbook so far this year is THE EVERYTHING TEX-MEX COOKBOOK (2006) by Linda Larsen. It contains 300 easy-to-make recipes of my favorite kinds of food.
 
I got a used book called Italian Family Cooking Like Mama Used to Make a couple of weeks ago. It cost me a penny from Amazon plus shipping. The book is loaded with great recipes but no pictures.

That sounds like a very interesting book.
I got the two I mentioned ordered today. I am really looking forward to them.
 
'Vogue' food critic and food w riter Jeffery Steingarten who wrote "The Man Who Ate Everything" offers a fantastic essay in the book (first link below) about Sushi, Sashimi and Kobe Beef that is colorfully written and makes one hunger for food and travel in Japan. He references Shizuo Tsuji's classic "Japanese Cooking: A Simple Art" (second link below) and I think he's compelled me to expand my almost non-existant knowledge & repetoire of Japanese cuisine by ordering myself a used copy. just in case others may be interested, too!

sammy- I say it over and over again here- but since you're new... and in case you're not aware- go to Amazon. Almost any book you could ever want is available USED for pennies on the dollar. I frequently buy $75 & $50 books for under ten bucks- plus a flat rate of $3.99 S&H no matter how big/heavy the book is. In fact- I can't count the great books I've picked-up for UNDER A BUCK! Plus- you can select the condition you want- "Like New" and "Nearly New" all the way down to "So-So", "Ex-Library Book/Much Loved" and "Rough Shape" for even less $. ...and I don't know quite why it didn't "click" w/ me before, but this is the companion book to the PBS series by the same name. The one where French Culinary Institute (NY, NY) maven Dorothy Hamilton interviews chefs on a set before a small audience, and then stands beside the chef as she cooks a dish. I've only seen a couple of the shows, but it looks great! And first flip thru the book looks like an informative/entertaining read, too! :)
 
Got the Pillsbury book today. Nice book lots of good recipes. Gonna try the beef stroganoff pot pie first.
 
My brother dropped me off a copy of Fannie Flagg's Original Whistle Stop Cafe Cookbook today. Great book I love it.

Ah-h-h Fannie Flagg is an awesome author, I met her in person at a book signing in Fairhope, Alabama she is a sweet and charming lady! I highly recommend any book she writes, but my favorite HOLIDAY story to read is called: "A Redbird Christmas" that she worte, the town where the story was centered around is an actual little town in Alabama called Magnolia Springs it is a quaint little town near Foley, Al where Fannie grew up and Robertsdale Alabama where I spent 32 years of my life. It is truly a speck of a town that is known only to a few lucky folks!
 
He didnt say where he got it. Since it had library markings he must have picked it up at a yard sale or flea market. It is in great shape and my kinda recipes. Since they are expecting a baby soon he and his wife have been hitting up the Goodwills around here. I had mentioned to him last time we talked to check out the cookbooks for me if he saw any Italian or Southern ones to please pick them up for me and Id pay him back. He wouldnt let me pay him back for it.

I remember Fannie Flagg fondly from the old Match Game game show on TV. She was SUCH a hoot! I remember how surprised I was to learn she was the author of the book "Fried Green Tomatoes" ( Kathy Bates and Jessica Tandy starred in the movie version, of course- and there was Cicily Tyson, Mary Stuart Masterson, Mary Louise Parker, Chris O'Donnel and Stan Shaw...) GREAT movie- and Book! Anyway- I remember the book having a few recipes included at the back...

mama & janie, I particularly think of you two these days when Italian grub comes to mind... Have either of you heard of Pino Luongo or gotten your hands on any of his books? I’d never even heard of him, but spied one book (first link below) then was led to his many others and I am INTRIGUED! I plan to order a couple of used copies soon and expect (hope) to be really entertained and impressed!
